رُبَّmany a غَريبٍstranger ناصِحِsincere الجَيبِthe bosom (heart)
رُبَّ غَريبٍ ناصِحِ الجَيبِ
وَاِبنِand a son أَبٍa father مُتَّهَمِsuspected الغَيبِwhat is hidden
وَاِبنِ أَبٍ مُتَّهَمِ الغَيبِ
Many a stranger is true at heart,
Many a stranger is sincere at heart,
while a brother may be suspect when out of sight;
while a brother is suspect behind one's back.
وَرُبَّand many a عَيّابٍfaultfinder لَهُhe has مَنظَرٌappearance
وَرُبَّ عَيّابٍ لَهُ مَنظَرٌ
مُشتَمِلُenfolding الثَوبِthe robe عَلىover العَيبِthe flaw
مُشتَمِلُ الثَوبِ عَلى العَيبِ
and many a fault-finder cuts a fine figure,
And many a faultfinder has a fine appearance,
wearing his robe over his own defect.
yet his robe enfolds a flaw.
