After fifty, do I still pine,

while gray hair is at war with folly?

    Age, gray hair, and folly—

a difficult matter, by your life!

O son of the Imam, why not then—

in the days when my bough was supple,

and there was little gray in my head,

and love's watering place was sweet,

and when my arrows struck true,

and my sword's blade was keen,

and when the remedy for lovely women

was talk with me and closeness?

So now, when they saw in me—the

    censurers—what they wished for me,

and folly had withdrawn from me,

and reason had aided gray hair,

and good sense had been perceived in me

by people—am I reproached, and do I pine?

I have sworn to drink no cup,

so long as a caravan makes pilgrimage for God.
