وَفَعَلتَand you did بيto me فِعلَthe deed of المُهَلَّبِal-Muhallab إِذwhen

You have dealt with me as al-Muhallab did
And you treated me as al-Muhallab did when
when he overwhelmed al-Farazdaq with lavish bounty.
he overwhelmed al-Farazdaq with abundant bounty.
فَبَعَثتَso you sent بِالأَموالِwith the money تُرغِبُنيyou entice me
كَلّاcertainly not وَرَبِّby the Lord of الشَفعِthe even وَالوَترِand the odd
And so you sent riches, hoping to win me over—
So you sent money to entice me.
Never! By the Lord of the Even and the Odd,
No, by the Lord of the even and the odd!
لاnot أَلبِسُI wear النَعماءَbounty مِنfrom رَجُلٍa man
أَلبَستُهُI clothed him in عاراًshame عَلىfor الدَهرِall time
I will not wear the bounty of a man
I will not clothe myself in bounty from a man
whom I have clothed in shame for all time.
whom I have clothed in shame for all time.
