How long—how much longer—are you to greed

    and to hopes a slave?

    For what God has decreed

in affairs, there is no turning back.

Ill fortune has taken its course with evil,

and good fortune has taken its course with good.

And people have followed the course

of them both, before and after.

    They trusted Time, yet Time

and the days keep no covenant.

It struck them down; the throng was wiped out,

and it destroyed what they had prepared.

Such is the world; so take no heed

    of it: ebb and flow.
