O beloved ones who went far from me, so there flowed

My eye's tears over my cheek like pearls.

When they parted from me, there departed

My soul from my body, and my reason left me.

My bones and flesh remained, along with my blood

And my veins, dwindling and wasting away.

O dear folk of affection, O people of fidelity,

And purity and generosity, O people of bounty.

Love of you has wearied the lovesick heart—oh,

How strange that those of communion should draw away

From a humble servant passionately enthralled by you,

Who does not heed the words of those who withdraw.

In remembering you there is life, just as

Abandoning it is my death; so the Lord of Majesty suffices me.

Like the earth's barren wastes, which revive if there comes

A rain-laden cloud toward them one day, pouring down.

    فامنحوني الوصل أو طيف الخال

    Long has my yearning for your sanctuary grown, my masters;

So grant me union, or a dream-vision of the beauty mark.

I seek no substitute for loving you,

No, even if it brings my death and annihilation.

If only I knew whether you are pleased with a youth

Whose habit is to err, O people of perfection.

If you are pleased, the soul returns; and if

Distance remains, then my longing is aflame.

So show compassion graciously, and bestow your favor,

O lions who have never had any equal.

And may God's blessing envelop Ahmad,

Together with peace, then his companions and family,

As long as the camel-driver chants to the pale camels, and as long as

The turtledove warbles on a branch, then sways.
