Indeed, the circling turns of misfortune have driven me
The cycles of fate have led me
To the land of the people of India, possessors of treasures.
To the land of India, home of treasures

Yet I find no guide here towards righteousness
Nor anyone there enjoining obedience to the commandments.
Nor one who commands good deeds

And people of passion and diversion are in every gathering;
The people here only care for passion and play
You see their ignorance in committing wrongful deeds.
In every gathering, you see them steeped in ignorance and sin

Like beasts, they walk hoof after hoof.
As they walk step by step in misguidance

So their concern is nothing but dirhams and wealth,
Their only concerns are riches and wealth
And their occupation is nothing but reckoning the ledgers.
Their days spent only counting ledgers

And in straitened circumstances and distress of mind.
My state constricted and thoughts troubled

I found myself lost among the Indians
And wondering whether there was a cultivated companion for evening talk.
Wondering if there was a conversational companion

A cultivated, discerning man, the best to forbid and command,
An elegant, judicious poet of virtue and command
