أَماCan ... not? لَكَfor you أَنto تَزورَvisit وَأَنتَwhile you are خِلوٌfree of love
صَحيحُsound القَلبِof heart أُختَthe sister of بَنيthe sons of غِفارِGhifar
Can you not visit, while free of love,
Sound of heart, the sister of Banu Ghifar?
فَماfor ... not بَرَحَتshe has ceased تُعيركَshe lends you مُقلَتَيهاher two eyes
فَتُعطيكَso she gives you المَنِيَّةَdeath فيin اِستِتارِsecrecy
For she has never ceased to lend you her eyes,
And so gives you death in secret.
وَتَسهوand you grow distracted فيduring حَديثِthe conversation of القَومِthe people حَتّىuntil
تَبَيَّنَdiscerned بَعضُsome of أَهلِكَyour kin ماwhat تُواريyou conceal
You grow distracted amid the people's talk, until
Some of your kin discern what you conceal.
فَمُتthen die ياO قَلبُheart ماnot بِكَin you مِنany دِفاعٍresistance
فَيُنجيكَso it might save you الدِفاعُresistance وَلاnor فِرارِflight
Then die, O heart: you have no strength to resist—
No resistance to save you, nor any means of flight.
فَلَمfor ... not أَرَI have seen طالِباًa seeker بِدَمٍof blood-vengeance كَمِثليlike me
أَوَدَّmore loving وَحُسنَand the beauty of مَطلوبٍone pursued بِثارِfor vengeance
For I have never seen a blood-avenger like me,
So loving—or so fair a quarry for vengeance.
إِذاwhen ذَكَراthey both mention بِثَأريof my blood-foe قُلتُI say سَقياًmay rain bless
لِثَأريupon my blood-foe ذيwearer of الخَواتِمِthe rings وَالسِوارِand the bracelet
When they both mention my blood-foe, I say, 'May rain bless
My blood-foe, wearer of rings and bracelet!'
وَماand ... not عَرَفَتshe acknowledged دَميmy blood فَتَبوءَso she might answer مِنهُfor it
بِرَهنٍwith a pledge فيin حِباليmy snares أَوor ضِمارِan unrecoverable debt
Nor has she acknowledged my blood, to answer for it
With a pledge in my snares, or a debt beyond recovery.
وَقَدand indeed زَعَمَclaimed العَواذِلُthe reproaching women أَنَّthat يَوميmy day
وَيَومَكَand your day بِالمُحَصَّبِat al-Muhassab ذيwith الجِمارِthe pebbles
And the reproaching women have claimed that my day
And yours at al-Muhassab, with its pebbles,
مِنَamong الأَعباءِthe burdens ثُمَّthen زَعَمتِyou claimed أَنthat لاnot
وَقُلتِand you said لِذيto one given to التَنازُعِquarrelling وَالتَماريand dispute
Were burdens; then you maintained they were not,
And said to one given to quarrelling and dispute:
كَذَبتُمyou have lied ماnot السَلامُthe greeting بِقَولٍan utterance زورٍfalsehood
وَلاnor اليَومُthe day الحَرامُsacred بِيَومِa day of ثارِvengeance
'You have lied! A greeting is no false utterance,
Nor is the sacred day a day of vengeance,
وَلاnor تَسليمُناour greeting حُرُماًin ritual consecration بِجُرمٍa crime
وَلاnor الحُبُّlove الكَريمُnoble لَناfor us بِعارِa disgrace
Nor is our greeting in ritual consecration a crime,
Nor is noble love a disgrace to us.'
فَإِنso if لَمnot نَلقَكُمwe meet you فَسَقىthen may ... water الغَواديthe morning clouds
بِلادَكِyour land وَالرَوِيّاتُand the rain-laden clouds السَواريtravelling by night
So if we do not meet you, may the morning clouds water
Your land—and may the rain-laden night clouds water it too.
