You punished me with rejection, and it is grievous.

And prolonged your abandonment of me, though it is unlike you.

You pledged not to turn away from me, even if there arose

From me deliberate offenses against you.

Then, behold, your pledge's cord has snapped

Between us, and behold, I am the one under your wrath.

Far be it from you to break pledges; rather,

The judgment of Adam's son may be wrong or right.

    يعصي الإلاه وبعد ذاك يتوب

    Grant that I did wrong deliberately, as you claimed;

One disobeys God, and afterward repents.

For a lapse that occurred—and one like me is not

Infallible—must the ensuing reproach be so severe?

I went along with what you alleged, since it was not

Fitting for someone like me to contradict you.

Return to affection, and, as a favor, avert your gaze

From what happened; delving into it is shameful.

Can forgetting you delight me, when your gracious deeds

Are inscribed in the language of truth within my breast?

    God knows that I long

For pardon, which comes readily from the generous.

Will we not make peace, despite our foes?

And peace is better—will I see you answer?

How long will you feign indifference to my plea for

The pardon I hope for? May you return.

Why not, when you are the first to demand

Your rights, while I am the one crucified?

    فاحكم علي وإنني المغلوب

    Behold, I have come toward your door, submissive;

So judge me, and indeed I am the vanquished.

Do not think me, in affection, a moon

That sometimes appears on its horizon, then vanishes.

Affection is innate in me, so scarcely can one see

My creeping shift in it with the vicissitudes of days.

For a person has neither choice nor control

In anything, and souls are of many kinds.

Such is the nature of him whose affection you bore away,

And who saw a frown appear upon your face.

You emptied your heart of my love, and it grieved me—

    That estrangement after drawing close.

    فأنا إذن ذاك الولي المسلوب

    I was the guardian of your pledge, but you cast me off;

So I am now that dispossessed guardian.

Indeed iron, despite the hardness of its substance,

Is softened and drawn by electricity.

Far be it from your heart to be tainted with harshness,

And a guardian from those virtues watches over it.

Put aside what interrupted friendship for a while,

Deliberately forgetting it, for a beloved remains a beloved.

It is, if you reflect, nothing but a cloud,

And it dispersed, revealing what it had veiled.

And shielded affection's face from a tale-bearer's evil,

And a breast, spacious among hearts, found rest.

So now it is fitting for me to say, tenderly:

You punished me with rejection, and it is grievous.
