يشكوhe complains لهاto her منهاof her ولاand not
يشكو لها منها ولا
يشكوcomplains of الهوىlove إلاexcept هوhe
يشكو الهوى إلا هو
He complains to her of her, and none
He complains to her about her but doesn't
complains of love but he.
Complain of love except for it
زفتwas led in bridal procession عروساas a bride للسوىto another
زفت عروسا للسوى
فتزايدتso increased بلواهhis affliction
فتزايدت بلواه
She was led as a bride to another,
A bride was brought to the bed
so his affliction grew.
So his afflictions increased
هاجتsurged عليهupon him شجونهhis sorrows
هاجت عليه شجونه
فتلهبتso blazed أحشاهhis entrails
فتلهبت أحشاه
His sorrows surged upon him,
His sorrows raged against him
so his entrails blazed.
So his intestines ignited
زارvisited الخيالthe apparition جفونهhis eyelids
زار الخيال جفونه
لوif غمضتclosed عيناهhis two eyes
لو غمضت عيناه
The apparition would visit his eyelids,
Imagination visited his eyelids
if his eyes closed.
Even if he closed his eyes
راحتwent away بعقلهwith his reason حينماwhen
راحت بعقله حينما
راحتwent away بهwith him نجواهhis private musings
راحت به نجواه
His reason was carried off when
It took away his mind when
his private musings carried him away.
It took away his whispering
قاسىendured العذابtorment نجيهاher confidant
قاسى العذاب نجيها
للّهfor God (an exclamation) ياO قيساهQays (lamented)
للّه يا قيساه
Her confidant endured torment.
He suffered torment for her sake
By God—alas, O Qays!
Oh God, his Qaysah
اللّهGod يرحمhas mercy on ضعفهhis weakness
اللّه يرحم ضعفه
فارحمهso have mercy on him ياO اللّهGod
فارحمه يا اللّه
May God have mercy on his weakness;
God have mercy on his weakness
so have mercy on him, O God.
So have mercy on him, O God
