لا اعتراضا وانما ضقت صدرا
My father, how did death treacherously take you?
My father, how suddenly death betrayed you
Not in protest, but my breast grew tight.
Not objecting, but with a heavy heart

وبهذا جرى القضاء فصبرا
Parting without farewell was grievous to me.
Parting without farewell is difficult for me
And thus ran fate's decree; patience, then.
And so destiny has decreed, so be patient

فبغتنا بالأمر فاحترت أمرا
I came to visit that day, unaware.
You returned that day unknowingly
The news took us unawares, and I knew not what to do.
So the matter surprised us and confused me

I cast aside what I held in my hand as a gift,
I have discarded what I prepared for you
for you from me, and my tears poured like rain.
And my tears rain down for you copiously

With a conscience at peace openly and discreetly

For my scorched heart, for my soul
Who is there for a home now darkened by your loss?
For the house that has become desolate without you

How strange—how can a living man dwell in a house,
How strange that the living inhabit a house
while his father dwells in a grave among men?
While their father inhabits a grave among people

With your loss, a heart's tenderness left me,
You took away my compassionate heart
I have not found it—alas!—in all mankind.
I could not find it, not even a trickle, among people

The angels and people all praised you,

So let your praise be chronicled, this life and the next
