Leave off amorous verse about youths and houris.
Leave the descriptions of boys and maidens
And speak ardently of freedom, and cry out for a constitution.
And chant freely for the constitution

And sing a song upon the string of feeling.
And sing with the strings of feeling a song
How far apart are verse and prose!
Far apart are prose and poetry

And breathe a spirit of poetry into their feelings,
And send from poetry a spirit in their feelings
As mirrors send light to the eyes.
Like the beginning of light sent to sights by dawn

And speak of a people's demands, which none denies
And mention the demands of a people that accepts them
Except the two allies: a hireling and an oppressor.
Except for the two allied, a hireling and an oppressor

What have we asked for, and is there any excess in the matter?
What did we demand, was there any transgression in the matter
We did nothing forbidden in what we presented.
We did not come up with anything forbidden

How many signed petitions, and how many envoys,
So many signed petitions and so many messengers
To ruler and subject among the sons of al-Khadra,
To an order from the greens and a commanded one

Standing as proof of consensus, speaking
The truth—yet truth among us goes unheeded.
Of the truth, and the truth in us is not seen
