In God's name we began the betrothal,
In the name of God we opened it with ease
In Ibn Arus's pleasant, fragrant home.
In the house of the son of the good scented bride

والشمس مخطوبة فيه إلى القمر
The house seemed, for what it held, a horizon,
As if the house was of what the horizon contained
And the sun within it was betrothed to the moon.
And the sun was engaged in it to the moon

فقلت والخبر يغنيكم عن الخبر
I was guardian to one of the two—a noble house;
I was the guardian of a house from which my honor came
So I said—and experience spares you a report:
So I said and the news will suffice you from the news

لاnot بيتa line شعرpoetry ولاnor بيتa tent منof الشعرhair
لا بيت شعر ولا بيت من الشعر
Two houses of nobility were joined to one another,
Two houses of honor joined together
Neither a line of verse nor a tent made of hair.
Not a house of poetry nor a house of poets
