من كل قلب لو تشا لك منزل

من كل قلب لو تشا لك منزل

وسكنت هذا القبر هلا تعدل

وسكنت هذا القبر هلا تعدل

In every heart, if you wished, you would have a home.

If only I could build a home for you

Yet you have settled in this grave—will you not turn away?

And you lived in this grave, if only you were content

حاشا لجسمك أن يغيره الثرى

حاشا لجسمك أن يغيره الثرى

وهو الذي كم من شمائل يشمل

وهو الذي كم من شمائل يشمل

Far be it that the earth should alter your body,

Never should your body be changed by the soil

for it embraces so many noble qualities.

For it encompasses so many virtues

ما كنت في الخضراء إلا مصلحا

ما كنت في الخضراء إلا مصلحا

وعليك فيها كل فضل ينقل

وعليك فيها كل فضل ينقل

In al-Khadra, you were nothing but a reformer,

You were never in the greenery except as a peacemaker

and there every virtue is recounted to your credit.

And you have every merit transported onto you

درست ما ربى الشعور واوجد الإ

درست ما ربى الشعور واوجد الإ

حساس قل يا حبذاك المنهل

حساس قل يا حبذاك المنهل

You studied what nurtured awareness and brought forth

You studied how to nurture noble feelings and create

feeling—say, oh, how fine that wellspring is!

Refined sensibilities, say: blessed is that spring

أوقفت نفسك للبلاد وأهلهما

أوقفت نفسك للبلاد وأهلهما

لهفي عليك كذا الرجال الكمل

لهفي عليك كذا الرجال الكمل

You devoted yourself to the lands and their people.

You dedicated yourself to the country and its people

How I grieve for you! Such are men of perfect virtue.

Yearning for you, thus, are mature men

لله ما قد كنت إلا قدوة

لله ما قد كنت إلا قدوة

فيما تقول لهم وفيما تفعل

فيما تقول لهم وفيما تفعل

God be praised—you were nothing but an example

By God, you were but an exemplar

in what you said to them and in what you did.

In what you told them and in what you did

برأت ذمتك التي نيطت بها

برأت ذمتك التي نيطت بها

خدم تزل بوطئهن الأرجل

خدم تزل بوطئهن الأرجل

You discharged your responsibility, upon which were laid

Your conscience, with which covenants were bound

duties that make feet slip as they are trodden.

Was exonerated, covenants which feet would violate

شهدت لك الأحباس وهي مساجد

شهدت لك الأحباس وهي مساجد

وملاجيء فيها اليتيم وأرمل

وملاجيء فيها اليتيم وأرمل

The charitable endowments bore witness for you—mosques

Imprisonments testified for you, and they are mosques

and shelters where the orphan and a widower dwell.

And places of refuge, wherein are the orphan and widow

يا من رفعت على الأنامل بينهم

يا من رفعت على الأنامل بينهم

ولمثل حضرتكم تشير الأنمل

ولمثل حضرتكم تشير الأنمل

O you who were borne aloft on fingertips among them,

O you who were raised above men’s shoulders amongst them

and to one of your stature the fingertips point.

And for the like of you, fingers point

رقيتهم فرقيت فوق رؤوسهم

رقيتهم فرقيت فوق رؤوسهم

يوم الجنازة وهو يوم يذهل

يوم الجنازة وهو يوم يذهل

You raised them up, so you were raised above their heads

You made them ascend, made them ascend above their heads

on the day of the funeral—a day that leaves one stunned.

On the day of your funeral, and it is a confusing day

صلى الإله على الرسول محمد

صلى الإله على الرسول محمد

وعلى الذي للدين مثلك يعمل

وعلى الذي للدين مثلك يعمل

May God bless the Messenger Muhammad,

May God bless the Messenger Muhammad

and whoever, like you, works for the faith.

And bless the one who works for the religion as you did

فاوضت أهلك في شؤونك مودعا

فاوضت أهلك في شؤونك مودعا

عند الشقيق شهادة لك تقبل

عند الشقيق شهادة لك تقبل

You conferred with your family about your affairs, leaving

You bade farewell to your family concerning your affairs

with your brother a testimony accepted in your favor.

At the brother’s, a testimony for you to accept

رح يا بشير إلى البرور مؤرخا

رح يا بشير إلى البرور مؤرخا

فالله بر بالخيار معجل

فالله بر بالخيار معجل
