I weep at parting from them while they are still alive.

For seven nights, green Tunisia wept for them.

No sword was in my hand, but rather

From beneath my jaws came a speckled serpent.

I loosed it as a hail of stones at their assassin,

To show him what poets can do.

I shall rouse among my people, whom I have tested,

    What indomitable resolve deems worthy—

Arab in feeling in its bursts of noble pride.

How splendid, by God, that true Arab pride!

Do not yield in weakness to the breaking of resolve,

Even if its dark clouds grow pitch-black.

Let them shed blood, take lives, bleed people dry,

Banish, annihilate, do whatever they wish.

And press on with the undertaking, without retreat,

For the rope has split the solid rock.
