I raised you, O Jarir, from the graves.

So say: “Without you, they would not have known I existed.”

So either mend your ways, or you are dead,

As at dawn, so at dusk you remain inert.

    Remember, O poet, my favor,

And how often you have needed my generosity.

How many pearls you have drawn from my sea,

And told humankind: “These are my necklaces.”

And how many a ruined verse I have rebuilt!

And how many witnesses I have in your poetry!

If I reclaimed them, eyes would go blind

To the verse in your collected poetry.

So take them, for they are given out as alms,

Though no alms are due on neatly strung pearls.

Even if they were whips to flog you,

I have flogged none of the slaves but you.
