How many nights we spent, and how many days,

In the forum, between issuing and presenting.

They are battalions, coming in succession from our writing,

Between those going at dusk, like birds, and those at dawn.

You burdened them with what makes lofty peaks sway; there travels by night

The column bearing them, or the camel-driver chants them.

You revealed them as surahs through which feeling comes alive,

From their manifest feeling that stirred you.

    They all wandered, though not all were poets;

So they wander from valley to valley.

Yet it is poetry, strung in verse and scattered in prose—

Your guiding sea, whose pearls would go unvalued but for you.

And those hastening forth among the young—their awakener,

After long slumber, is your resounding voice.
