Brings the past to life among us, so that we almost

See with our eyes what you recount.

Here al-Habhab, Abd Allah, laid out

The House with his two hands, as fortresses are laid out.

تذكرنا المعاهد من بناها

فتدعونا لمعرفة اليقين

فتدعونا لمعرفة اليقين

The places of learning remind us of their builders,

So they summon us to certain knowledge.

هنا الزيتونة الهادي سناها

هنا الزيتونة الهادي سناها

بنور الله لا نور الغصون

بنور الله لا نور الغصون

Here is al-Zaytuna, the Olive Tree, whose radiance guides

By God's light, not the light of boughs.

فلا شرقية بلغت علاها

فلا شرقية بلغت علاها

ولا غربية في أي حين

ولا غربية في أي حين

So no eastern one has attained its heights,

Nor any western one, at any time.

تأيد بالشروح وبالمتون

It takes pride in its connection to the House,

A pride upheld by commentaries and texts.

يفيض عليك بالدر الثمين

So the institute of learning became a sea,

Overflowing upon you with precious pearls.

جرت كالسيل من ماء معين

جرت كالسيل من ماء معين

When you ask its people's hands for rain,

They flow like a torrent of running water.

Great masters followed one another there as guides,

Walking between its plains and rugged ground.

Peruse the ledger of night and day, and you will pardon

The revealer of the guarded secret.

For had time not roused us, we would have been undone

By dreams in that stillness.

بهمتكم لتحقيق الظنون

Sons of green al-Zaytuna, come forth,

With your resolve, to fulfill expectations.

وكونوا الروضة الغناء تزهو

وكونوا الروضة الغناء تزهو

بأنوار المعارف واليقين

بأنوار المعارف واليقين

And be the luxuriant garden, flourishing

With the lights of knowledge and certainty.
