قالو أجابت سؤلك الأيام

يا حبذا لو صحت الأحلام

They said, “The days have granted your wish.”

Ah, how lovely if dreams came true!

نقلوا حديثا طار في مدلوله

لبي وأكبر وقعه الإعلام

They relayed news whose meaning sent

My mind soaring; the announcement magnified its impact.

دخل السرور على الفؤاد مباغتا

بحصول أمر دونه الإجرام

Joy entered the heart unawares,

At attaining something loftier than the celestial bodies.

وبلوغك المأمول من بعد الإيا

س كأنه غب الوقوع منام

And attaining what you hoped for after despair

Seems a dream just after it comes to pass.

لفظوا بمرغوبي فقلت هو الربي

ع تفتقت عن زهره الأكمام

They spoke of what I desired, so I said, “It is spring—

The bud-sheaths have burst open to reveal its blossoms.”

هذا هو اللفظ المركب إنما

أين المفيد لكي يقال كلام

This is a compound utterance, but

Where is the sense that would make it speech?

كانت به الآمال أصفارا خلت

واليوم قد نطقت بها الأرقام

Hopes of it had been empty zeros,

And today the numerals have given them voice.

وبدت بوارقها فقلت مضمّنا

يا حبذا لو صحت الأحلام

And their gleams appeared, so I said, quoting:

“Ah, how lovely if dreams came true!”
