Everyone hopes to be happy,
Everyone hopes to be happy
and prolongs his slumber in the cradle of stagnation.
And lingers long in the cradle of stagnation
هلاwhy not نضاcast off الجلبابthe cloak عنfrom نظراتهhis glances
هلا نضا الجلباب عن نظراته
فأرتهso it showed him كيفhow يحصلattain المقصوداthe intended aim
فأرته كيف يحصل المقصودا
Why has he not cast the cloak off his gaze,
Why not uncover his eyes from their veils
so it might show him how to attain his aim?
And show him how to attain what is sought
فإلىthen until متىwhen والقومwhile the people بينamid تخاذلmutual abandonment
فإلى متى والقوم بين تخاذل
وتقاعسand inaction يتذللونthey abase themselves عبيداas slaves
وتقاعس يتذللون عبيدا
How long, then, will the people, amid mutual abandonment
For how long will the people waver
and inaction, abase themselves as slaves?
Between retreat and submission as slaves
يترقبونthey await لنجدةfor rescue منfrom غيرهمothers besides themselves
يترقبون لنجدة من غيرهم
مثلlike البتيمprobably 'the orphan' ترقبawaiting الترشيداguidance
مثل البتيم ترقب الترشيدا
They await rescue from others,
Awaiting salvation from others
like an orphan awaiting guidance.
Like orphans hoping for charity
لاnot يستحقdeserves الرشدsound judgment غيرanyone but موفقa successful person
لا يستحق الرشد غير موفق
أولىmore worthy بذلكfor that أنto يرىbe seen منشوداsought-after
أولى بذلك أن يرى منشودا
Only a successful person merits sound judgment,
None deserve maturity except the successful
and is thus more worthy of being regarded as sought-after.
It is best for one to see what is wished for
منwhoever لمnot يجردdraw out فيin الأمورaffairs لنفسهfor himself
من لم يجرد في الأمور لنفسه
منهاfrom them معيناa helper فليعدthen let him be counted مفقوداlost
منها معينا فليعد مفقودا
Whoever does not, in life's affairs, draw out for himself
He who does not make provisions by himself
a helper from them—let him be counted lost.
Should consider himself already lost
أوجدcreate لنفسكfor yourself فيamong البريةhumankind قيمةworth
أوجد لنفسك في البرية قيمة
أولاor else فإنكfor indeed you لمnot تكنbe معدوداcounted
أولا فإنك لم تكن معدودا
Create worth for yourself among humankind,
Give yourself worth in the wilderness
or else you will count for nothing.
Before you were never even counted
لاno حقright يهضمis infringed فيamong الأنامhumankind لغيرfor anyone other than منone who
لا حق يهضم في الأنام لغير من
يرضىis content بكونهwith his being فيamong الورىpeople موجوداpresent
يرضى بكونه في الورى موجودا
No right is denied among humankind except that of one
No right is usurped among people except from those
content merely to exist among people.
Who accept to exist in this world
ماnot كانwas شأنthe condition المسلمينof the Muslims كشأنناlike our condition
ما كان شأن المسلمين كشأننا
هذاthis فعلاindeed تذكرونyou recall جدوداforefathers
هذا فعلا تذكرون جدودا
The Muslims' condition was not like ours
Our state was never like that of Muslims
as it is now; indeed, you recall forefathers.
Those were men to be remembered
