With the two poets we enliven literature's gathering.

And with poetry let us revive markets for the Arabs.

All minds have inclined toward our gathering,

as the generous incline toward recitation and delight.

Suppose others have a club like our gathering:

wine has a quality that grapes do not.

We have not let words loose, unrefined and unconsidered,

until vessels are fashioned from gold.

We submit what we express to criticism, for they have learned

through fire the difference between aloeswood and firewood.

How many a rhymester sends his verses out, faults and all,

and boasts of them like a peacock of its tail!

If he saw what the peacock saw, he would cry out at them,

for they contain neither a metrical peg nor a cord.

You see the seas of meter mingling when he cleaves them:

hemistichs of Munsarih mixed there with Muqtadab.

He does not know their names, nor does he have

a passion for them—only the air of an affiliate.

The weaving matches the meaning of their words; you see

those chants as rags upon timber.

How often we suffered those whose domination ruined

us, while they raised a claim unbidden.

They have composed no poetry to earn thereby

    a right conferred by mastery—how I marvel!

You see audacity in approving and condemning,

coming from them against poets, poetry, and oratory.

They have neither judgment nor a balance to restrain them,

nor reliance on any text from books.

If poetry's meanings do not suit their taste,

they avert their eyes, though you were granted a prophet's speech.

And a group beneath them, witless and shackled,

cannot distinguish a metrical ending from a blow.

    From these—how crushing their tread!—

an ember of distress flared within our minds.

    Through them, the toil of people like us was wasted;

in poetry, in either case, we suffer.

Were it not for a small band of our acquaintances

who seek us out, we would spend our lives in weariness,

or a look at pages from which we gain,

shining from the East like meteors,

such as the verse of al-Rusafi, al-Khatib, and

Hafiz and Shawqi, bringers of marvels.

From the year when poetry's impulse dawned within me,

to this day of our poet, the finest choice,

I found none worthy but him; then there rose among us

the full moon of verse, and we called, 'Come to literature!'

Then into our company joined, from the al-Mara family,

a prophet of poetry; we recorded his date by his epithet.

Today we celebrate al-Khalsi and al-Hasan,

son of the best month, whom we ascribe to the best prophet.

Rise, both of you: we greet you in verse; indeed,

you have made pilgrimage to the House in your Arab club.

    ولنرتبط أدبا يربو على النسب

    Rise: we clasp you with our hearts before our hands;

let us bind ourselves in letters, a bond surpassing lineage.

    قوما نحلكما في اشرف الرتب

    Rise: let us pour you lawful magic in broad daylight;

rise: let us lodge you in the noblest ranks.

Welcome to your radiant star in our gathering!

Alight in ample welcome—rather, alight upon the clouds.

    We used to commune with you in verse from afar;

here today is that same poetry, close at hand, for you both.

I offered them both my apology that day

for staying away, since breaking a promise ill becomes me.

Two verses I composed in excuse, containing

'The winds blow as ...'; they admired my verse.

We had agreed upon a meeting,

which both honored for me, as I had requested.

Yet God would only bring it to completion for me,

with ample good fortune, and wreathed the cup in love.

For Mustafa's arrival was unplanned, and so

my house, at his appearance, smiled with gleaming teeth.

by the cream of writers, not purchased with wealth.

Such is true pride: if you would boast, boast

of this sort of thing; pride does not lie in pedigree.

That discerning man said, 'We are not, though noble ...'

How excellent his like! Behold the Arabs' proud spirit.

poetry among them; so no glorification through falsehood.

a platform that made us feel literature's elevation.

I have worked at weaving poetry since childhood,

until middle age, desiring nothing else.

its steps dust-gray; I do not complain of weariness.
