I implore you by God, for your young lover's sake:

I am the one enslaved by love for you.

You opened my broken heart when

You opened your mouth in a smile.

I was given passion to drink for you; how I wish

Love, when it gave me drink, had given you drink too.

I love you so much that I came to love myself,

    Because this heart holds you.

No blame falls on me for youthful dalliance,

While grace dances in your youth.

    لست الشيوعي ولا اشتراكي

    I am a monotheist in my passion;

I am no communist, nor a socialist.

By God, there is nothing strange in my madness:

Who would not go mad on seeing you?

Cast those nets aside, for I

Am caught in the nets of languid eyes.

Whoever is your ardent lover never walks

Except with his two feet in snares.

Stretch out your hands to embrace me.

What wrong have your hands done me?

Your cheeks—and I do not complain—

Are guilty, and so are the sides of your face.

Your grace has captured my heart,

And your eyes are the two Babylonians.

Are these pearls, or your front teeth?

How can rubies compare with your charms?

Say, has the tale of my longing reached you?

O mistress of beauty, has it reached you?

By God, I have not listened to a reproacher,

Nor have I been drawn to anyone but you.

I hope for nothing from you

    Except to win your favor.

    من لي بجنات ملتقاك

    Between my ribs burns the fire of my longing;

Who will grant me the gardens of meeting you?

In your palms, the oud has a song,

Like a bird on an arak branch.

    أنا المعنى الذي اصطفاك

    Indeed, I am obedient to your command;

I am the love-tormented one who chose you.

    إن قلت هات أجبت هاك

    My life is all I have for my girl;

If you say, 'Give it,' I answer, 'Take it.'

You have found a listening ear: command, and you shall be obeyed.

Indeed, I listen attentively to your call.

I do not favor one-person rule,

    Except your decree, my angel.
