I held the reed pen with my fingertips,

And I said to thought, 'Have you words?'

And called with my heart, not with my tongue,

A friend who long ago took root

In my heart, just as I wished.

And I said—and what I said was guidance itself—

Through estrangement, the one who loves you is lost in vain.

Then why not look upon the wronged one

With an eye that quenches thirst?

Your friend fears he will not be protected.

And our shared aim is an exchange of letters,

So that through it our bond may grow stronger.

And here it is, accomplished on my part,

As hoped, and it brings an end

To this dispute and this enmity.

Acknowledge to me the steadfastness of affection,

For you remain the very core of my heart.

And within your breast I place my firmest trust.

I have had enough of hoping; is there a reply

That will be the decisive answer to these words?

By your worth, I, with the hand of reproach,

Have opened a door in my heart for your love.

Then enter it, with welcome and ample room.

For no one besides you has knocked upon it,

Save the embodied form of love; so dwell with it.

And beware, beware of lifting it

From the heart, save with the hand of safety.

A lad who has come seeking refuge in you from you.

For I have no ally but love.

Nor dismiss his verse, for it is the messenger,

And you are enchanted by his poems.
