Can the strike be banished by exiling seven,

Though my eye has streamed with tears for them?

Would a free man among you consent to oppression,

And to being parted from you after union?

Enough of the humiliation we have suffered at his hands,

And abandonment, and complaints of pain.

The days of failing one another are past; we have united

To ward off evils and bring benefit.

The days of idleness are past; we have awakened

To devote every effort to the common good.

And in brotherhood we have tasted sweet intoxication,

So we are drunk on it without a draught.

So beware of blunting resolve, until

Our name is echoed in every region.

And we tear up, in final divorce from the tram,

    Tickets—a divorce not called revocable.

And we strike their ears with the echo of my words:

Can the strike be banished by exiling seven?
