Hail the east wind, hail Salma—let us greet it!

Oh, how alike the two are! It mirrors her, and she mirrors it.

The lovesick one has no messenger he can trust

Except the breeze, when it blows to greet him.

I made it carry a far-traveling message of love from me.

Blessed be its night journey, for hopes drive it onward.

I sent it as envoy, in my stead, to my enchantress,

Perhaps she will indeed meet it instead of me.

    غنته فهي عن القينات تغنيه

    The nightingales sing to welcome its passing;

They serenade it, leaving it no need of singing girls.

It tells them my story of love, and behold—

The cooing birds convey it to my Salma.

Its repeated telling gave her certainty of my love,

For every cooing bird in the quarter recounts it.

I attained my wish by spreading it openly,

For relief lies hidden in its spreading.

Whichever collared dove you question about that memory

Among the carrier pigeons, it can only speak of it at length.

I imparted my feeling to the birds; they never cooed

Without one of its meanings in their cooing.

In every spreading garden tree is a pulpit from which

The nightingales preached, and its maidens swayed.

I taught them poetry, that through it they might rouse

The free conscience, so the discerning may give merit its due.

Poetry is but the universe's tongue, bestowed upon

The master of feeling; when he calls, it answers him.

But for you, my Salma, I would never have used a rhyme,

Nor would its camel-chanter have sung this poetry.
