I ask you: what kind am I?

Am I a soldier, though my rank is among the poets?

Yes, the sword is mine, but it rests inside a sheath,

And my hand has never moved except in salute.

Indeed, I shall lead armies drawn from my poetry,

And each, in battle, is worth a thousand.

And I shall enter their seas, sea after sea,

And I have a submarine in every letter.

And after half a month I bring forth a full moon,

Matching its counterpart in duration, half-month for half-month.

And I spread the constitution's banner within them,

So every eye may see it plainly.

And I bear it sincerely as a medal

Upon my generous patriotism—and that suffices.

And that, my punishment, remains as a remembrance,

Recorded: I am conscripted against my will.
