I entered paths there was no avoiding.

Do you question me about them, though I am not to blame?

حقائق قد تلاها الدهر جهرا

وعرفها لنا كنها فكنها

Truths that time has recited aloud,

And revealed to us, essence after essence.

وحركت الورى فلتسألنها

The earth shook with a tremor,

And stirred mankind—so be sure to ask her.

وتلك تحية بلسان حرب

وتلك تحية بلسان حرب

وكل تحية لا بد تنهى

وكل تحية لا بد تنهى

That is a greeting in the language of war,

And every greeting must come to an end.

إذا ما الحرب أجرتها دماء

إذا ما الحرب أجرتها دماء

سنجري القول أبحارا وأنها

سنجري القول أبحارا وأنها

If blood has set war flowing,

We shall make speech flow as seas and [rivers?].

وإني فارس الهيجاء شعرا

وإني فارس الهيجاء شعرا

وهذي كلمة بالعقل زنها

وهذي كلمة بالعقل زنها

I am a knight of battle in verse,

And this is a statement: weigh it with reason.

إذا شانت وظيفكم القوافي

إذا شانت وظيفكم القوافي

فكيف وتلك حاله لم يشنها

فكيف وتلك حاله لم يشنها

If rhymes have disgraced your office,

Then how, with his condition thus, has he not disgraced it?

وإن خان السوى الخضرا فإني

وإن خان السوى الخضرا فإني

بوزن الأرض ما لا لم أخنها

بوزن الأرض ما لا لم أخنها

Though others have betrayed al-Khadra, I,

For the earth's weight [in wealth?], have not betrayed her.

ولو كاغنت لذلك نفس حرّ

ولو كاغنت لذلك نفس حرّ

لشرفها ولكن لم يكنها

لشرفها ولكن لم يكنها

And if that one [had?] a free man's soul,

He would have ennobled her, but he did not embody it.

طرحت وظيفة جلبت هواني

طرحت وظيفة جلبت هواني

أتجلب لي الهوان ولم أهنها

أتجلب لي الهوان ولم أهنها

I cast aside an office that brought me humiliation.

Does it bring me humiliation, though I have not dishonored it?

ولكن طانني ربي فأمسى

ولكن طانني ربي فأمسى

على يدها افتخاري فليصنها

على يدها افتخاري فليصنها

But my Lord [protected me?], and so

My pride arose through it—may He preserve it.

محبّة تونس سجنت بنيها

محبّة تونس سجنت بنيها

ويخشاه الجبان فلم يبنها

ويخشاه الجبان فلم يبنها

Love for Tunisia has imprisoned her sons;

The coward fears that imprisonment, so he has not revealed that love.

سأنشر دعوة الدستور فيها

سأنشر دعوة الدستور فيها

وإن هالت معاكسه وإن ها

وإن هالت معاكسه وإن ها

I shall spread the call for the constitution there,

Even if its adversary terrifies, and even if [unfinished].
