1. أيقظ شعورك واطرح برقع الكسل

    وشمر الذيل واستوفز الى العمل

    Awaken your awareness and cast aside the veil of laziness.

    And tuck up your hem and spring to work.

  2. مضى زمان تقاليد نقدّسها

    ولا نشاهد ما فيها من الخلل

    Gone is the age of traditions we held sacred,

    Without noticing the faults within them.

  3. وللتقاليد آجال محددة

    وكل عصر وما فيه إلى أجل

    Traditions have fixed lifespans,

    And every age, with all it holds, has its term.

  4. كنا نرى بدعا ما أحدثوه لنا

    وكل شيء عتيق عندنا أزلي

    We deemed what they introduced for us heretical innovations,

    And every ancient thing, to us, was eternal.

  5. يرقى السوى الصرح والأزيا مزخرفة

    ونحن في سمل نبكي على الطلل

    Others ascend the lofty edifice, their clothes adorned,

    While we, in threadbare clothing, weep over the ruins.

  6. أو نحرق الإرم المضني ونعجب من

    إخفاق سعي وما في الجهل من حيل

    Or exhaust ourselves gnashing our teeth, and marvel at

    The failure of our striving, though ignorance has no resources.

  7. تداولتنا عصور والنفوس على

    ذاك الجمود ومسرانا على مهل

    Age after age has passed over us, while our souls cling to

    That stagnation, and our journey proceeds slowly.

  8. تجارنا في كساد والفلاحة في

    جدب وذو الحرفة التعساء في ملل

    Our merchants suffer slack trade, and farming lies in

    Drought, while the man of a wretched craft is bored.

  9. مرت بنا حقب والقوم جامدة

    يرثى لها الحال اذ تشكو من الفشل

    Epochs passed over us, while the people remained inert,

    Their plight pitiable as they complained of failure.

  10. حتى تجلت بشمس الاقتصاد لنا

    غياهب كشفت عن بارق الأمل

    Until the sun of economy dispelled for us

    Deep darkness, revealing a lightning-flash of hope.

  11. دلت دلالة ذي صدق بلهجتها

    إذ شفعتها يد الإنجاز لا المطل

    It gave guidance in the voice of one sincere,

    For the hand of accomplishment, not procrastination, supported it.

  12. قد أشرقت في سما الإرشاد ناشرة

    أعلام نصح لتحمينا من الخطل

    It shone in the sky of guidance, unfurling

    Banners of counsel to protect us from folly.

  13. فأصبحت سلع الأهلي نافقة

    في سوقه ويد الفلاح في عمل

    So the local man's goods began to sell readily

    In his market, and the farmer's hand was busy at work.

  14. واسترسلت لنساء الحي فاغترفت

    منها الأيامي وسوتهن بالرجل

    It flowed freely to the quarter's women, who drew

    From it—the women without husbands—and it made them equal to men.

  15. واشركتهن في الأعمال شاغلة

    ايدي اللواتي اشتكين الضر من علل

    It gave them a share in the work, occupying

    The hands of those who had complained of suffering from afflictions.

  16. وارسلتها لأهليهن جامعة

    برين في عمل بالنقد والحلل

    And sent them to their families, combining

    Two kindnesses in one act: cash and fine garments.

  17. أعظم به أي مشروع يمائله

    من المشاريع في الأقطار والملل

    How great it is! What enterprise can equal it

    Among enterprises across countries and faiths?

  18. هو الكفيل بإصلاح وتوضحة

    هو الدليل لنا في أي ما سبل

    It guarantees reform and clarification;

    It is our guide on any path.

  19. فانشر له أذنا وافتح به بصرا

    واجن النتائج بالأسماع والمقل

    So lend it an ear, and through it open your eyes,

    And reap the results with your ears and eyes.

  20. كن كيفما شئت واستمسك بعروته

    تحيا بها الأرض في سهل وفي جبل

    Be however you wish, and hold fast to its handhold;

    Through it the land comes alive, on the plain and on the mountain.

  21. كم بث نصحا وكم ألقى مسامرة

    تحيا بها الأرض في سهل وفي جيل

    How much counsel it spread, how many evening talks it gave!

    Through it the land comes alive, on the plain and in a generation.

  22. وكم أشار إشارات مسددة

    وكم يد مدها تنبو عن الكلل

    And how many well-directed suggestions it made,

    And how many hands it extended, untouched by weariness!

  23. عج بالسعيد إلى الباب الجديد يجد

    مصداق قولي عيانا غير محتمل

    Lead the fortunate one toward Bāb al-Jadīd; he will find

    Visible proof of my words, beyond any doubt.

  24. ويلتقي بكرام في جوانبها

    لا عيب فيهم سوى الإغراق في العمل

    And he will meet noble people within its precincts,

    Whose only fault is utter absorption in work.

  25. قاموا بأعباء أعمال تحررهم

    وإن تصفد منها الدهر بالخجل

    They shouldered the burdens of work that frees them,

    Even if time itself is shackled by them with shame.

  26. وكل شيء يرى فيها فقل حسن

    واعجب به شاكرا واضربه كالمثل

    Of everything seen there, say: 'It is good.'

    Admire it gratefully, and hold it up as an example.

  27. هذي الإدارة تسعى في مصالحنا

    يا أيها التونسي أعني إليك ولي

    This administration strives for our welfare,

    O Tunisian—I mean, for you and for me.

  28. فامدد لها بالثنا كفا مشفعة

    كف المعين وهذا منتهى الأمل

    So extend to it a hand of praise, accompanied by

    A helping hand; this is the utmost hope.
