    The late-afternoon sun inclined toward setting,

    Fading like a flower in decline.

    And tinted the sky's cheek with a little

    Of its radiance; shortly after that,

    Night drew on, and stillness settled.

    The tent of darkness was pitched, and there appeared

    A third companion to the two luminaries, revealing its radiance.

    And the stars followed it, clothing the sky

    With pearls, little by little; the expanse

    Apart from them can scarcely be seen.

    For the bright stars, their glitter is like fireflies,

    Or bubbles in a wine jar, floating and sinking,

    Or necklaces scattered over the wastelands,

    Or eyes of tale-bearers, watching

    تترقى البدور فيها فتاره

    Everything—by God, what eyes!

    The full moons advance among them, at times

    في انطماس طورا وطورا مناره

    Bent, and at times rounded;

    At times effaced, and at times a beacon.

    إن للدهر حالتين تكون

    That waning and fullness are a sign

    That time has two states of being.

    أرسلتها شمس الضحى كالستور

    Darkness is nothing but a tress of hair

    Which the midmorning sun let down like curtains;

    نسبوه للنجم أو للبدور

    So some light appeared through it,

    Which they attributed to the star or to the full moons.

    Slipping from one place to another,

    Aided by its legs and eyelids.

    Everything upon the earth appears

    In a slumber that has bowed the plants of the wilds.

    No one there travels at evening or at dawn,

    Usually; sleep then is customary.

    قوم بعضهم وبعض نيام

    And they took shelter; no throng remains upon the earth.

    Some are up, and some asleep,

    فالأماني تخالفت والشؤون

    With gladness then, or pain;

    For hopes and circumstances differ.

    فتشك فجلبة فدعاء

    Then supplication, then uproar, then calling;

    Then complaint, then clamor, then prayer;

    فنواح فصرخة فغناء

    Then relief, then laughter, then weeping;

    Then wailing, then a scream, then song;

    ذاك يبكي وذاك يشكو وذاكا

    Then a din, then a sigh, then a moan.

    That one weeps, that one complains, and that one

    And a lover has met the beloved, while a lovesick lover

    Waits, his tears pouring forth;

    وجريح ساقت له الحتف حرب

    And a sick person complains, with no remedy;

    And a wounded man, brought to death by war;

    ويتامى وعجز وأرامل

    And bereaved mothers, for whom iron softens;

    And orphans, the elderly, and widows;

    وأديب تخط منه الأنامل

    And hungry, oppressed people, and a pregnant woman;

    And a writer whose fingers inscribe

    Every word he says is precious.

    And a prisoner among people hopes for release;

    And a poor man has found no pure water;

    لو سمعت إذ ذاك صوتا ينادي

    And a debtor, weighed down by debts.

    If then you heard a voice calling,

    'O full moon, if only your light were visible!'

    You would surely know that this singer

    Is a lover lamenting painful separation,

    Whose habit in love is weeping and longing.

    Everything he sees lends beauty.

    So the night's blackness is, to him, hair,

    والنجوم فيما يراه الثغور

    And those full moons are the beloved's face;

    And the stars, as he sees them, are mouths,

    وذيول مجرورة من قيان

    And songs scattered about, and beautiful women;

    And trailing trains of singing girls;

    ملكتها الأجياد تلك الشجون

    And necklaces strung from pearls,

    Necks have claimed them—such tangled cares.

    Conjectures about them have proved fruitless.

    فسواء لدي فيك الفصول

    There is no excess in what I recount of you;

    So your seasons are alike to me,

    For you are an excellent path to poetry.

    My Lord said—not I—'Be,' and it is.
