وطني ولا تنسب إلى الدستور
If you seek to appease your foes, then do not say,
If you seek to please your adversaries, do not say
“My country,” nor profess allegiance to the constitution.
'My homeland,' nor be affiliated with the Destour.

Turn your back on feeling, humbly lowering
And turn aside from feeling, lowering
Your wing to them, content with little.
Your wing to them, and content with little.

Hand the reins to those who drive you; for men like you,
And cast the reins to your drivers, for your kind,
O son of the land, were made for subjugation.
O son of the land, was prepared for servitude.

They are whom you know—and “protection” has its special distinction;
They are those you know, and the protectorate has a special merit;
They are the ones who came to bring you development.
And they are the ones who came to you to bring development.

They laid for you the railways by which
They laid railways for you, which firmly anchored
Their feet took root, and which granted right of passage.
Their feet; and you were granted a right of passage.

And they brought you out of the depths of darkness, after
They found you there, knowing nothing of light.
They found you there, ignorant of the light.

Safe after fear beneath their shelter,
And after fear, you found safety within their shelter,
You began to frolic among them in delight.
So you began to frolic among them with joy.

They showed the proof of civilization; then sprang
And they showed you proof of civilization; then stepped forward
Your youths toward the heights of thought.
Your young men toward the stairways of thought.

How strange that, after all this, you should take a stand
How strange that, after that, you claim credit for a stand
Beside them—a stand in battle you deemed necessary.
You took alongside them in battle—a necessary one!

Your blood truly flowed alongside the protectors;
How many who remained were lame or blind.
How many lame men and blind men among those who remained!

You paid your due in the cause of saving them;
You fulfilled your duty for the sake of their survival;
Why, then, dream amid all this of liberation?
So why do you dream of liberation through it?

They know better than you what recompense is due; it is only
They know better than you about recompense; it is only that
That the pretext of delay has grown burdensome to you.
The pretext of delay has weighed heavily upon you.
