    I asked the grave about you—if only the grave could speak.

    O choicest of free men, among those who hold the foremost place!

    وفي الليلة الظلماء يفتقد البدر

    I missed you, a light among the stars;

    on the dark night, the full moon is missed.

    ويفقدكم مصر ويفقدكم عصر

    I missed you before this day, on it, and after it;

    and Egypt misses you, and an age misses you.

    I may forget, but never the one laid out, as there poured

    upon him, from eyes, their streaming rain.

    I remembered you, your breaths now the last,

    as you yielded them freely, purity accompanying your soul.

    You called for the Master, your friend, repeatedly uttering

    his name: that day, one free man called to another.

    You distracted yourself from death with green Tunisia, steadfast,

    thinking of her prisoner—such is patience.

    لي اليوم في الأنفاس من كرها عطر

    Calling at the top of your voice: 'O Tunisia, whose

    return perfumes my breaths today!

    I smell a sweet-scented bloom from Paradise,

    and deem that blossom to come from our green Tunisia.'

    You called until the soul's Lord recalled it,

    and remembrance was acclaimed its successor in this world.

    The rhymes rose to console me, weeping,

    and the country consoled everyone that day.

    وتاجك أهل أن يرصعه الدر

    I remembered you when you charged your friend to elegize you;

    your crown deserves to be studded with pearls.

    I did not betray my pledge concerning your charge; I merely

    delayed the elegy since poetry failed me.

    Then I strung necklaces of tears as pearls

    for you, while the sea ebbed away with poetry's pearls.

    I said, as I watched your bier move:

    Though my treasure is lost, he has a treasure within me.

    At every moment my grief was renewed

    for you, as time bereaved me of my friend.

    Whenever my eyes turned, you were before them,

    an image of radiance, through which many things are seen.

    You are not hidden from my eyes; rather,

    your presence in things is their soul and secret.

    ولولا سناء البدر ما عرف الشهر

    To the days you were the full moon of their splendor;

    without the full moon's radiance, the month would not be known.

    وجدتك في الشعار هذا هو العمر

    I found you in my art; I found you in wisdom;

    I found you in the watchword—this is life.

    You trained under me in rhymes, trading verses,

    a half-line from me, a half-line from you.

    The science of prosody recalls to me one eager

    to question me about it, so his standing might rise.

    The garden of verse reminds me of a blossom

    with which you served Islam—truly, the reward is yours.

    Those letters remind me of you complaining

    of time, for treachery is the nature of days.

    My collected poems, and what they contain, remind me of you,

    because you said: 'Only enchantment and gleaming pearls.'

    وما هو إلا الشمس وهي له الفجر

    My gatherings remind me of that companion;

    he is none other than the sun, and they are his dawn.

    All the virtues remind me of him who

    wore them as a necklace, ennobled by his neck.

    With him they were like a garden laid bare, as there fell

    upon its crushed bough its green leaves.

    كذاك كذاك الفخر يتبعه الفخر

    The Husaynid house took pride in you;

    so it is, so it is: glory is followed by glory.

    Al-Nasir, the lord and prince, wept for a pearl

    lost from the crown, its place now desolate.

    ولولا لباس الحزن ما خطها الحبر

    You brightened so many of humankind's pages;

    but for mourning's garb, ink would not have inscribed them.

    عجبت لها خضرا وأدمعها حمر

    You set green Tunisia's eyes streaming blood;

    I marveled: she is green, yet her tears are red.

    Green Tunisia wept for Salih, just as

    her sister Egypt had wept for Kamil before her.

    She has the right—behold, the time has come for her to miss

    one like you. Where is your equal? She weeps with good cause.

    We lifted the country's veil from her face,

    as you desire, O Salih, and the matter became clear.

    red and crescent-bearing, surrounded by victory.

    so those of reason may see, and the ban be lifted.

    beneath our soles, as a sea with flood and ebb.

    Its waves cast them out as corpses risen high,

    and the price rises for what its shells contain.

    Had your lamented, honored self witnessed

    the resistance of free men, joy would have intoxicated you.

    When they imprison a man—your confidant among them—

    you congratulate green Tunisia on him, and intoxication overtakes him.

    ومن طلب الحسناء لم يغله المهر

    Such are the qualities of those undertaking a revival;

    whoever seeks a beautiful bride is not deterred by the dowry.

    Sweetness in humiliation's cup is not palatable,

    but in honor's cup, bitterness is found sweet.

    شفيعه في التأجيل مقضيّة النذر

    Here is an elegy, as you instructed;

    its plea for the delay is a vow now fulfilled.

    فلا البحر مبديه إليهم ولا البر

    My elegy is your peer—its peer is rare;

    neither sea nor land reveals one to them.

    This book of mine is a bouquet I have scattered

    upon your grave, where verse and prose bloom through it.

    Bid the Merciful's angel recite its lines

    to you, and say: 'O God, my Lord, to You be thanks.'
