مَنْwho مُنْصفيone who does me justice منagainst أحومٍa dark-eyed one حَوَمُهthe darkness of his eyes
للظبيthe gazelle's لاno بلrather حشاهhis waist بلrather هِضَمُهhis slenderness
Who will do me justice against a dark-eyed one whose dark eyes
Who will be just to me against a passionate lover
are a gazelle's—no, rather his waist, rather his slenderness?
Who hovers around the antelope, rather craves and devours it
صحيحُsound جسمٍof body فُديتُmay I be sacrificed for صحتَهhis health
سَقيمُlanguid جَفْنِof eyelid ومحنتيand my torment سَقمُهhis languor
Sound of body—may I be sacrificed for his health—
With a strong and healthy body I was deprived of its health
languid of eyelid, and his languor is my torment.
My eyelids are sick and their sickness makes me sick
أُقبِّلُI kiss الأقحوانthe chrysanthemum مِنْout of وَلهيmy lovesick longing
كأنماas though الأقحوانُthe chrysanthemum فيهin it فمُهhis mouth
I kiss the chrysanthemum in my lovesick longing,
I kiss the cheeks as if the cheeks were his mouth
as though his mouth were there in the chrysanthemum.
And I twist my hand on the rod thinking it was his body so I embraced it
والبانand the bān tree ألوىI wind علىaround القضيبthe branch يديmy hand
I take it to be قدّهhis figure فالتزمُهso I embrace it
And I wind my hand around the bān tree's branch,
The eyes of that one wounded my liver
taking it for his figure, and so embrace it.
His blood dripped on my cheeks from the wound
قدindeed جرحتhas wounded عينthe eye ذاكof that one فيin كبديmy liver
جُرْحاًa wound علىover وجنتيهhis two cheeks سالflowed دمُهits blood
That one's eye has wounded my liver,
His black hair made me dark and oppressed me
with a wound whose blood flowed over his cheeks.
His oppression did not wrong me nor was he unjust
أظلُمgrew dark شعْرُهhis hair فصارthen it began يظلمنيto wrong me
لمdid not يُخَطنيmiss me ظلْمُهُits injustice ولاnor ظُلَمُهُits dark shadows
His hair grew dark, then took to wronging me;
My situation and his are strange
neither its injustice nor its shadows passed me by.
He always humiliates me while being shy
وإنَّand indeed أمْرِيmy state وأمرهand his state عجبٌa marvel
يُهينُنُيhe humiliates me دائماًalways واحتشمهand I revere him
And indeed, my state and his are a marvel:
They told me to forget him but I said to them
he always humiliates me, yet I revere him.
Pour on my companion and never deny him
قالوthey said ليto me اتركهleave him عنكaway from you قلتI said لهمto them
صبيmy longing علىfor صَاحبيmy companion ولاand not عدمُهhis loss
They told me, 'Give him up'; I said to them:
If it were not for passionate eyes that fall in love
'Better my longing for my companion than his loss.'

Nor would David covet a ewe's beauty
would Shuayb have been served, nor would his sheep have grazed.
Until he lost his judgement

Nor would a lovely ewe have tempted
Oh God between me and the one whose mouth
Dawud, until his wisdom came to naught.
Is like the cornerstone, everyone longs to touch it
اللهGod بينيbetween me وبينَand between مَنْthe one who فمُهُhis mouth

May God judge between me and the one whose mouth
is like the Corner: everyone longs to touch it.
