What use is my standing by the deserted traces,

and my weeping—and what good does my weeping do?

And how long will the mention of Asma stir my longing?

And where is one who knows of Asma?

I do not know whether she settled among Najran's palms,

or stayed by Tayma's two ban trees,

or went to the tamarisks—the tamarisks of Hajir,

so that Hajir's tamarisks became my very entrails.

A tall, shapely beauty: in her mantle, you imagine her as

the summer moon on winter nights.

She lets her hair fall over the radiance of her face,

thus unveiling morning beneath the sky.

O daughter of the tribe, we have departed, and once we were

neighbors, and the time of meeting has passed.

I had pledged to her, as she had pledged to me,

in youth, that she would seek no lover but me.

Then we parted, yet my love for Asma remains,

and my fidelity to her remains my fidelity of old.
