What have I to do with the timeworn, barren ruins

between the arak trees and the finest dune?

And why do I pass the dwellings, asking

their ruins for news of those who camped there?

If it were in my power not to love a beauty,

a tender one, I would—but it is not in my power.

Never did I seek to wean my heart from its folly

without its swearing earnestly that it would not be weaned.

By God, O north wind, carry

a greeting from me, O winds of the north.

And when you pass the ghada trees and their dwellers,

say, 'May you be watered, ghada, though left uninhabited,

from the hand of a tender maiden with dark-rimmed eyes,

or the hand of a dark-eyed man whose brows meet.'

Then, when the month of fasting comes, nothing remains

but to restrain my hands and curb my tongue.

And I fast my whole day; then, when darkness enfolds

my night, I prostrate until the morning shines clear.

And you see such serenity upon me that, if I were told,

'Take this violet; smell it,' I would not do so.

Then, when Shawwal comes—and it is dear—

I return to mixing my cinnamon into my pepper.

And I remain among the wine jars, set in their midst,

like Ibn Hani in the villages of Qutrabbul.

Whoever comes to draw a drink, I say, 'Go! There is a tavern for you

elsewhere, for these spreading trees are all mine.'

If anyone is a lord of noble deeds, I say, 'Stop!

We are the guests, and you are master of the house.'
