فجفيتناbut you spurned us فَلناso we have عليكagainst you المعتبُgrounds for reproach
This year we visited your secluded chamber, O Zaynab,
Last year we visited your tent, oh Zainab
but you spurned us, so we have cause to reproach you.
But you snubbed us, so we blame you
ثمthen أعتلَلْتِyou offered an excuse وقُلْتِand you said أدّبَنيhe disciplined me أبيmy father
ياO ليتَif only لمnot يخلقbe created لغانيةfor a beautiful woman أبُa father
Then you offered an excuse, saying, “My father disciplined me.”
Then you fell ill and said your father scolded you
Would that no father had been created for a beauty!
Oh, if only the gossiping tongues were never created

My eyes have never seen a gazelle like you,
My eyes have never seen a gazelle like you
piercing with her breast and striking with her glances.
With breasts that pierce, and a glance that strikes

But what of that dainty, bending figure?
But how is that delicate curved waist
But what of that little, gilded cheek?
And that smooth polished cheek

Why do I love yet go unloved, and why am I,
I neither love nor do not love, yet I
though innocent, seen as though I were guilty?
See myself as guilty though innocent

Your temple-lock is a little scorpion; you made the crescent
The beauty mark near your temple made the crescent moon
your face—but the Scorpion is unwelcome to the crescent.
A face the scorpion dislikes for the crescent moon

I have a kinsman's claim upon you, and after it
I have the right of kinship after
a companion's claim; among you are those who keep company.
The right of companionship, and some accompany you

O traveler to Hawjiyya, where the caravan
Oh you traveling to Buhaire's blessed caravan
is blessed and the precinct fertile,
In which he is prosperous and the saddlebags are fertile

kiss the hand of Ibn Buhayr, for his fingertips
Kiss the hand of Ibn Buhaire, his fingers
are clouds that gleam with silver and pour it down.
Are clouds dripping with dew and pouring down
وأعتَبثand proves futile وصوليmy coming مرةًa time فيin مرةa time
وأروحand I depart عنfrom مولايmy lord وهوwhile he مُغيبُabsent
And my coming proves futile, time after time,
Sometimes I transgress by visiting over and over
and I depart from my lord while he is absent.
And leave my master though he is absent

If I came to Yathrib, he was already in Mecca;
If I came to Yathrib before that to Mecca
or if I came to Mecca, Yathrib hid him away.
Or if I came to Mecca, missing him in Yathrib

And your father, Buhayr—whenever I came to him,
And your father Buhaire, wherever I came to him
the greeter would call out to me, and the retinue would resound.
Welcomed me loudly, the caravan beating drums
