يُحَمِّلُنيburdens me ذَاthis البينُthe parting ماwhat لستُI am not أقدرُI can bear
وتنسيَنيand make me forget الأيامُthe days لَيْلَىLayla فأذكرyet I remember
This parting burdens me with what I cannot bear.
The separation loads me what I cannot bear,
The days make me forget Layla, yet I remember.
And the days make me forget Layla, so I remember,
وإنand if حضرتْshe is present ليلَىLayla وغبتُand I am absent فإننيthen indeed I
علىon العهدِthe pledge باقٍremaining إذاwhen أَغيبُI am absent وتحضرُand she is present
And if Layla is present and I am absent, then I
And if Layla is present and I am absent, I am still
Remain true to the pledge when I am absent and she is present.
Faithful to the pact, whether absent or present,
أَغارتْshe went to Ghawr's lowlands وانجدْناand we went to Najd's uplands علىwith غيرno مَوْعدٍappointed meeting
فحتامَthen until when? مناamong us مُنجدونَtravelers to Najd ومغورُand a traveler to Ghawr
She went to Ghawr and we to Najd, with no meeting arranged;
She was jealous of us, though with no appointment,
How long, then, must some of us be Najd-bound and another Ghawr-bound?
So the jealous and the jealous lovers dispersed,
عَقيليةٌan Aqili woman منْهاfrom her علىabove الغصنِthe bough والنقاand the sand dune
وظبيand the gazelle الفلاَof the open desert والليلُand the night والصبحُand the dawn مُفجْرُbreaking
An Aqili woman, surpassing the bough and the sand dune,
A female pigeon on the branch and the antelope,
The desert gazelle, the night, and the breaking dawn.
The night, the dawn, and the bright morning,
إذاif نسَمَتْshe breathes فالعنبرُthen ambergris الوردُroses ريحهاher scent
وإنand if بَسَمَتْshe smiles حارis bewildered الأقاحthe daisies المنوّرُin bloom
When she breathes, her scent is ambergris and roses;
When she breathes, the scent of musk and roses is her breath,
And when she smiles, the blooming daisies are bewildered.
And when she smiles, the bright full moon glows,
ونحسبهاand we think her سكرىdrunk بلاwithout شُرْبِdrinking قهوةٍwine
ومَنْand whoever رِيقُهhis saliva الصهباreddish wine لاno بُدَّescape يَسْكرُbecomes drunk
We think her drunk, though she has drunk no wine;
And we think her intoxicated without drinking coffee,
And one whose saliva is reddish wine must surely grow drunk.
And he whose saliva is wine, must get drunk,
أجَارتَناO our neighbor كمhow long تَهْجرينyou shun ولمand not أكنI had been
جفوتُI acted coldly فأُجفْاso I am shunned أوor هجرتِyou forsook فأهجَرُso I am forsaken
O our neighbor, how long will you shun me? I had not
You neglected me, though I was not,
Been cold, to be met with coldness—or you forsook me, and I am forsaken.
Neglectful to be neglected, or you abandoned, so I abandon,
وفيand for أيّwhich ذنبٍfault تنكرينyou disown معارفيmy familiar qualities
ومَاand not خِلتُI thought معروفَthe kindness المودةof affection ينكرis disowned
And for what fault do you disown what you know of me?
And in what sin do you deny our friendship?
I never thought affection's kindness could be disowned.
I have never denied the known kindness,
سَهرتُI stayed awake ونمتمْand you slept بالجفونِwith the eyelids وأنهand indeed it
لعَارٌsurely a shame عليكمupon you ترقدونyou slumber وأسْهرand I stay awake
I kept vigil while you slept with eyelids shut, and it
I stayed up while you all fell asleep, and it is
Is surely a shame upon you that you slumber while I keep vigil.
A disgrace upon you to sleep while I stay up,
أمِيلI turn بِطَرَفيwith my gaze عنكمaway from you وأردُّهand I return it
وأعذلُand I reproach قلبيmy heart فيfor هواكمlove of you وأعْذُرand I excuse it
I turn my gaze away from you, then bring it back;
I avert my eyes from you and return them,
And I reproach my heart for loving you, then excuse it.
And I excuse my heart for loving you and excuse,
وانand if غيَّرchanges الأحبابُthe loved ones جورَthe cruelty زمانِهمof their age
فوthen, by اللهGod لاnot أَسْلُوI cease to love ولاand not أتغيرI change
Even if the cruelty of their age changes loved ones,
And if friends change the injustice of their time,
Then, by God, I shall not cease to love, nor shall I change.
By God, I will not complain or change.
