ومذand since كنتُI existed لمdid not اقصدْseek out لئيماًa base man لحاجةٍfor a need

ولوeven if بلغتreached أموالُهُhis riches حُبُكَthe woven paths الُسَّماof heaven
Since I came to be, I have never sought a base man to meet a need,
Though I have never wished harm upon the mean
Even if his riches reached the woven paths of heaven.
Even if his wealth rivals your love, so supreme
وماand not كلّevery برقٍlightning flash لاحgleamed ليbefore me يستفزُّنيstirs me
ولاnor كلّevery منone whom القاهI meet him القاهI find him مُنْعِمَاa benefactor
Not every lightning flash that gleams before me stirs me,
Not every flash that shines is made to tempt me
Nor do I find a benefactor in everyone I meet.
Nor all who bestow, bestow as bounty’s stream
إذاwhen قيلit was said هذاthis موردٌa watering place قلتI said قدindeed أرىI see
ولكنَّbut نفسَthe soul الحرَّof the free man تحتملendures الظمىthirst
When told, 'This is a watering place,' I say, 'Indeed, I see,'
When this is called a spring, I say I see
But a free man's soul can endure thirst.
Yet the soul bears thirst when waters teem
معاشرcompanies أملاكof kings خدمتُI served بمدحهمby praising them
وماand not أمدحI praise الأملاكthe kings إلاَّexcept لأخْدَمَاso I may be served
I have served companies of kings by praising them,
O lords I’ve served in song and praise
And I praise kings only to be served.
I laud lords but to serve, it would seem

نبياًa prophet عليهupon him اللهGod صلىmay He send blessings وسلماand grant peace
Nor is there any disgrace for me whenever I address poems
No flaw in me though odes I’ve sought
To a prophet—may God bless him and grant him peace.
A prophet God’s blessings on him stream
وفضلand the excellence عليof Ali والبتولand al-Batul, the Chaste One وأحمدand Ahmad
لهمtheirs ليسit is not للأصباحfor the dawns إنif يتكتماremain concealed
And the excellence of Ali, al-Batul, and Ahmad
And Ali, the virgin and Ahmed
Is theirs; dawn cannot remain concealed [wording uncertain].
Dawns cannot hide their lights’ high gleam
