وعَهْدٌ فاينَ الوعدُ والعهدُ واليدُ
O our neighbor, between us there is a tryst,
And a pledge—so where are the promise, the pledge, and the hand?

You claimed that your phantom visits me;
And how can a phantom visit one who does not sleep?

And in my entrails, because of you, O sister of Mazin,
There is a fire that flares whenever I say it has gone out.

And return as you once were, for returning is more praiseworthy.

And by God, I do not weep for worldly life gone by,
But for people—I went to the lowlands, and they to the uplands.

The eyes of wide-eyed gazelles cannot remain steadfast.

And how can I endure when there appears before my eyes
A slender bough swaying atop a sand dune?

David was indeed lovestruck, and Joseph felt desire
For that woman, though they are more chaste and better guided than I.

You swore by the Lord of the sacrificial camels, whose throats bleed
At Mecca, while the famished pilgrims are prostrate.
