    O my neighbor, I see you have broken the promise.

    And forgotten those encounters and the helping hand.

    And I marveled at you: I found your heart hard,

    While perfume and dew waft from your cheeks.

    What had I to do with you, and you with me?

    You were my loved ones; you have turned into my foes.

    I shall surely make the pale camels brave every desert waste,

    That swallows the hardy, the massive, and the rugged camels.

    And I shall surely deliver a message to Zabid,

    That folds up the books—nay, makes solid rock tremble.

    O King al-Muzaffar, a plea:

    May my soul be your ransom, and your enviers your ransom too.

    Do not spare the Bedouins—Bedouins they are not.

    They thought the matter had been left unattended.

    By God, their oaths have availed them nothing.

    They left your palaces in the towns a barren waste.

    Surdud yields nothing, nor does al-Kudra; and whoever

    Comes to Dhu'al finds horses lying in wait.

    مَا أن بقي أحد يُركّب مِضْمَدا

    As for plowing, they have turned their ox-teams loose;

    Not a soul remains to fit a yoke.

    Likewise camel transport: they have no camel left

    For the driver to ride by night to you as he chants.

    There is but one sword of glory there—for he

    Has not betrayed your covenant since you knew him, nor transgressed—

    None but Ali, that newcomer, standing guard.

    And he has indeed girded and robed himself in loyalty.

    فعليُّ أطيبُ كلّ حيّ مَوْلِدا

    And likewise al-Qubay'i, who comes from Ghafiq;

    For Ali is the noblest-born of all the living.

    And likewise Ahmad in al-Dahi, and his people.

    By God, I have not neglected your servant Ahmad.

    وسِوَاهمَ قد أخلفوك الموعدا

    Only these three are lords there;

    And those besides them have broken their promise to you.

    As for Wutaywit, whose suckling was foul,

    He spread corruption under King al-Muzaffar's rule.

    And he wanted a land grant, and was such that, if

    A mouse sniffed his loaf, he would sigh.

    And likewise Ibn Isa; al-Qasir answered him.

    And he saw [unclear wording] a banner, so [unclear wording].

    And the lad of Hushaysh, yesterday, when you favored him—

    Lo! He swore to lay waste Surdud.

    What is the bat worth? What is the foul ooze? What

    Is dry grass worth when it reaches the hearth?

    Drive the lean steeds against them toward the gravelly flats,

    And fall upon them before the morning light breaks.

    لا تتركن مُثقفاً ومُهنّدا

    Shatter your swords—nay, your spears—against them;

    Leave no straightened spear or Indian-forged sword.

    Zabid gained joy from meeting you,

    And whoever sought defiance came to you in fetters.

    فظهرت أيمنَ من أبيكَ وَاسعدا

    And your father, the fortunate one, had been victorious;

    So you proved more auspicious and fortunate than your father.

    أو أنت أكرمتَ اللئيمَ تمردا

    If you honor a noble man, you win him;

    Or if you honor a base man, he rebels.
