ياO برقُlightning أَوْمِضْflash فيin الظّلامthe darkness الغَربَبِpitch-black
كالسيفِlike a sword سُلَّwas unsheathed بكفِin the hand of اضبطَfirm-gripped أَغلْبِthick-necked and mighty
O lightning, flash in the pitch-black darkness,
O lightning, flash in the gloomy darkness
like a sword unsheathed in a firm-gripped, thick-necked man's hand.
Like a sword, storm with a firm grip
أمسىbecame at dusk يرفرفُflutters والسحابُand the clouds لأجلِهfor its sake
يبكيweeps ويرخىand lets down هيذباًa downpour فيwithin هيذبa downpour
It began to flutter at dusk, while the clouds, for its sake,
Clouds flutter for it in the evening
weep and let loose downpour within downpour.
Weeping gently on the gentle one
إنif أنتyou جزتَpassed علىover العقيقal-ʿAqīq أوor اللّوىal-Liwā
ياO برقُlightning فامطرthen rain upon ليfor me معَاهدَthe familiar haunts of زَينبِZaynab
If you pass over al-ʿAqīq or al-Liwā,
If you strike ruby or bending willow
O lightning, then rain for me upon Zaynab's haunts,
O lightning, rain down the dwellings of Zainab
أوطانthe homes of أطرابيmy joys وملعبand the playground of صبوتيmy youthful passion
فألْعَبso play بهاin them ياO برقٌlightning مثليlike me وأطْرَبand rejoice
the homes of my joys and the playground of my youthful passion.
My homelands and playgrounds of my youth
So play there, O lightning, like me, and rejoice.
So I can play, o lightning, like my youth and be joyous
وكماand just as جررتI trailed بهاin them ذيولَthe hems of شبيبتيmy youth
فاجْررso trail غمَامَكyour clouds فيthrough المعَاهدthe familiar haunts والْعبِand play
And just as I trailed the hems of my youth there,
And as you dragged the tails of my adolescence
so trail your clouds through the familiar haunts, and play.
So drag your clouds over the dwellings and plains
أيامَin the days when ليلاهمtheir Layla بسنِّat the age of صبيّةٍa young girl
وأناand I كذاكlikewise مراهقٌan adolescent سِنُّthe age of الصبيa boy
In the days when their Layla was a young girl,
Days when nights were like the age of a girl
and I, likewise, an adolescent of boyish years;
And I was like that, an adolescent, a boy's age
أيامَin the days when لاno إبلٌcamels تشدُwere saddled لِرِحْلَةِfor a journey
أيامَin the days when لاno بحرsea يسيرtravels بمرْكبِwith a vessel
in the days when no camels were saddled for a journey,
Days with no camels for travels
in the days when no sea carried a vessel along.
Days with no sea voyaging in ships
كنَّاwe were كماjust as نبتتgrew بنانٌfingers فيon يَدٍa hand
فاليومَbut today نحنwe بمشقin the east (probably intended: بمشرق) وبمغربِand in the west
We were like fingers growing on one hand;
We were like saplings grown in a hand
but today we are in [the east] and in the west.
Today we are in hardship and west
ياO قَلْبُheart لاdo not تأسَفْgrieve علىover شيءanything مضىthat has passed
فاللهfor God يُفرجُrelieves كلevery كُرْبةِanguish of مُكرَبِan afflicted person
O heart, do not grieve over anything that has passed,
O heart, do not grieve what is past
for God relieves every anguish of the afflicted.
For God will relieve all suffering of those in agony
فالسيفُfor the sword يصدىrusts قدindeed علمتyou have known وينجليand shines clear
والبدرُand the full moon يَطلعُrises قدindeed رأيتَyou have seen ويختبيand hides away
For the sword rusts, as you know, and shines again,
I know the sword clashes and then is still
and the full moon rises, as you have seen, and hides away.
I have seen the moon rise, disappear and return
