O landmark of the loved ones, what a fine guide!
O teacher of loved ones, what an excellent teacher
Do you, I wonder, know what is in my heart?
Do you see what is in my conscience and know

أيُّwhich المواطنthe dwelling places مِنof تهامةٍTihamah خيمواthey pitched tents
أيُّ المواطن مِن تهامةٍ خيموا
O guide to the loved ones, tell me of them:
O teacher of loved ones, tell me about them
In which part of Tihamah did they pitch their tents?
Which place in Tihama have they camped

Did they travel eastward on their journey, or westward?
Did they travel east in their journey or go west
Or did they head for Najd on departing, or for Tihamah?
Or did they settle among themselves or become suspicious

They have treated me unfairly: they sleep, while wakeful
They are not fair to me, sleeping while I stay awake
Is my eye; sleepers are not like those who keep vigil.
My eyes are not like those who sleep

And whatever the case, whether they are cold or keep faith,
And in any case, whether they are unjust or loyal
May God never leave the dwellings bereft of them.
May Allah not make their homes desolate

They said, 'You wept blood, while we wept tears.'
They said you cried blood while we shed tears
Tell them, 'Blood is nothing like tears.'
Tell them, does a tear resemble blood?

They said, 'You concealed love when you divulged it.'
They said you concealed love when you made it public
Can one whose secret lies in his eyelid conceal it?
Who can conceal what is in his eyelids?

And even if I had concealed my love for my companions,
Had I hid the love of their company
Sickness would betray it—and a tall one does not fall ill.
Illness would have slept while intense wakefulness does not sleep

Ah, for them—Arabs who, whenever lightning flashes,
Oh woe to them! Arabs when lightning flashed
Sight it, yearn to depart, and moan with longing.
They prepared to leave and packed up

They follow the grass wherever the rain has poured;
They follow the grass wherever it bent
They strap on their camel-litters to go there and bridle their mounts.
Hobbling their pregnant she-camels toward it

I would have felt no sorrow at their departure,
I would not have grieved their departure
But for a dark-eyed gazelle in the howdahs.
Except for a gazelle among the howdahs moaning

A bough bears him as he walks, and a sand dune seats him;
A branch moves it and it sits still
He shines from beneath the veil, yet acts unjustly.
Shining from beneath the veil then darkens

I have not forgotten their words on al-Hima's sandy ground,
I have not forgotten their words at draughts of fever
While the pale camels were urged on by song, and the young she-camels were lean:
Challenging fate and throwing arrows

'Ibn Humayr has gone gray, though he is master of poems—
The son of Humayr composed though he is the lord of poems
Amorous, full-breasted maidens, whose like none can compose.'
Of finest Arab verse none can compose like him

What harm does its ashen color do the hawk?
What harm can the hawk's whiteness cause
And what, do you think, has the jet-black raven to boast of?
And with what do you see the brown crow boast?

I praise the prophetic king whose hands
Right hand is more generous than the clouds.
Are honored by clouds as the most generous

And I served Mansur and the kings after him
I serve his son, King al-Muzaffar.
And now serve his son the victorious king

I am this house's Salman; none comes after me
Salman, this verse neither preceded
In loving it, nor comes before me.
Nor followed my love for him

And even if al-Ghuwayr and its people shun me,
If the jealous one and his family shunned me
And I find no one there to visit who grants favors,
And I lost a refuge to visit and enjoy

فهناك يوسف والغنا والمَغْنَمُ
Then Ta'izz—rather, Habb—lies ahead of my riding camels;
I take pride in love before my mares
For there are Yusuf, wealth, and spoils.
For there is Joseph, singing, and the plunder

The horses neigh in the tethering places around him:
The horses neigh in the garrison around him
That is a towering mare, and this a towering stallion.
Breastplates of David are abundant before him

And David's coats of mail are with him, long and ample;
And the white swords shine and straighten
And the helmets gleam, and the swords are straightened.
