مَاnot ملتُI turned away عنfrom أهلthe people of اللوىal-Liwa والمُنْحَنَىand al-Munhana
مَلَلاًout of weariness ولاnor عنهمapart from them هنانيgave me pleasure مَاwhat هَنَىwas pleasant
I have not turned away from the people of al-Liwa and al-Munhana
I have not wearied of the folk of love and bending,
out of weariness, nor has any pleasure gladdened me apart from them.
Nor wearied of their haunts however life may trend.
ماnot ملتُI turned away عنfrom رَمْلِthe sands of العقيقal-Aqiq وأننيand indeed I
قلبيmy heart هناكthere وإنand even though غداhas become جسميmy body هُناhere
I have not turned away from al-Aqiq’s sands; and indeed,
I have not wearied of the ruby sands' far-stretching,
my heart is there, though my body has come to be here.
My heart is there, though here my body's end.
وهجرتُand I left دارَthe home of العَامريةal-Amiriyya مِثلَjust as مَاwhat
هجرleft الحسينُHusayn الماءَthe water تحميهguarding it القناthe lances
And I left al-Amiriyya’s home, just as
I left Al-Ameriyeh's abode, like one
Husayn left the water guarded by lances.
Who left, for fear of thirst, sweet waters wend.
منfrom أينwhere ليfor me عِوضٌa substitute باثلةfor the tamarisk of رادعٍRadiʿ
وبأيكهِand for its thickets وبسدرِهand for its lote trees حلوsweet الجنىthe fruit
Where can I find a substitute for the tamarisk of Radiʿ,
Whence now, to cheer me, songs like topaz glowing?
and for its thickets and its sweet-fruited lote trees?
Or gardens bright, or willows softly bent?
إنيindeed I وإنand even though أتْهمَتُI have gone to Tihama أهوىI long أنto أرىI see

دوَرthe dwellings of الحُصَيْبal-Husayb ودربهنand their lane الأيمناthe right-hand
Indeed, though I have gone to Tihama, I long to see
Though men accuse me, I must pine to see
the dwellings of al-Husayb and their right-hand lane.
The maidens' tents, and their dear right-hand tend,
ويشوقنيand makes me yearn النخلُthe palms البواسقtowering كُلّماwhenever
جذبتُI drew down عثاكيلاًdate clusters كليلاتdrooping الدُّناnearness
And the towering palms stir my longing whenever
And tall palm-trees, whenever I try to forget them,
I draw down date clusters, drooping close at hand.
Still call me back, with memories untranscend.
لاَno ليلَnight منin place of ليلa night of الجَريبal-Jarib يُعِيْضنيcompensates me
ليلُa night of الجريبal-Jarib أجلّthe finest كسبgain يُقتنىis acquired
No night can make up for a night in al-Jarib;
No night compares with Layl al-Jarib's night,
a night in al-Jarib is the finest gain one can acquire.
That night is gain however life be sped.
الماءُthe water عذبٌsweet والنسيمand the breeze مَعَنْبرٌscented with ambergris
والبانand the ban tree أنif مَرَّpasses النسيمthe breeze بهby it أنثنَىbends
The water is sweet, and the breeze is scented with ambergris,
The waters there are sweet, the breeze is fragrant,
and the ban tree bends when the breeze passes by it.
Where through the trees the perfumed zephyrs wend.
بَلَدٌa land مضىpassed فيهthrough it مُعَاذMuʿadh مَهَرولاًhurrying
حَذَراًfor fear بعُفْرِby the tawny ones ظبائهits gazelles إنif يُفْتَناhe might be tempted
A land through which Muʿadh hurried,
A land where Mu'adh hurried fearful, dreading
fearing he might be tempted by its tawny gazelles.
Its huntresses should find himself their prey.

And there are people there who, if a raid comes upon them,
There folk, when foes assailed them, swiftly hiding
hide their swords and unsheathe their eyes.
Their swords, let show no glance of wrath or fray.

Their remembrance is with me, and my heart is with them.
To think of them is joy, my heart keeps near them—
Oh, if only they could find there what is here!
Would God that here like peace one's days might spend!
