He remembered a beloved and a dwelling at al-ʿAqīq.
I reminisce about a thousand sacrifices in `Uqayq, and a dwelling
And the lightning that flashed late at night stirred his longing.
That lightning illuminated and aroused longing in it

He lay sleepless, as one bitten by a snake lies,
So it spent the night as al-Salim spent it, lying down
Wrestling with yearning from there and from here.
Treating anguish from here and from there

Whenever his eye complained of the assault of tears,
When its eyes complain of the tyranny of tears
His body complained of what it suffered from wasting illness's assault.
The body complains of the oppression of suspicions

And in the valley's bend, to the right of the ghaḍā trees,
And in the valley's curve, on the valley's right
Are tents—my life for those tents and that bend—
Are tents that soothe me, of tents and a curve

And a tender beauty, like the crescent traveling by night.
With gazelles like the crescent when it glides
Her figure sways like a slender branch as it bends.
The likes of a wand when it bends grace them

Divided into night and dawn and stone,
Dividing night and dawn and frozen darkness
And water—how hard of heart, and how soft!
And water—so how hardened and softened a heart can be!

وماand not خُلقتْwas created حسنآءa beautiful woman إلاّexcept لتحسناto show kindness
Lovely of face, yet her favor cannot be won;
A beautiful face whose beauty cannot be attained
No fair woman was created except to show kindness.
And no beauty was created but to beautify

I stayed against my will the day her camel litters departed.
I stayed against my will the day her bracelets jingled
And I was not willing to stay while she departed.
And I was not content to stay while she jingled

And I checked my eyelid when it overflowed with tears;
And I held back my eyelids when its waters surged
But in vain: tears had become its constant habit.
Alas! Tears have become its habit

My two friends, will union at al-Nukhaylah return,
My friend, has the date palm's companion returned?
So I may forgive scattering separation for what it has done?
So pardon the scattered love that afflicts me

I am a son of deserts and rhymes, and always
I am the son of ryhmes and meters, and fruit
A branch's fruit speaks its praise the moment it is gathered.
Of the branch has never ceased to be plucked when ripe

I left the lowland folk their paltry aid,
I left the people of al-Ghor what sustains them
And would not accept the scant livelihood close at hand.
And did not approve whoever scrimps on livelihood

I have not ceased praising kings and composing poetry of character
Strands; I accept no dwelling but the star.
So I am not content unless it is a star my abode

What have I to do with seeking misers? I would never
I do not aim for the stingy, nor was I
Clothe in my praise any but one worthy of wearing praise.
To clothe my praise in other than the finest raiment

And on the lofty peak atop Ashih
In time of dearth, from the head of a shaykh
Is one of ample stride, chest, reach, and courtyard.
Of handsome bearing, chest, stature, and refinement

Indeed, a downpour from Ṣārim al-Dīn has rained upon me,
He gifted me from the swords of al-Din a downpour
Wholesome—the best downpour for the earth is one that does it good.
Of blessings, and the best downpours make the land prosperous

I sought him from my people's land, destitute,
I sought it from the land of my starving people
And returned as though I had found a mine in him.
And so returned as if from it I had found a mine
