Congratulations on your victory, as you came amid the din,

canopied by Rudayni spears and pennons.

And welcome, O Rasulid among kings! Even if

al-Simak and its two Eagles set, may you never disappear.

You attacked Mabyan when its blustering flared,

while in al-Rutaybi were mixed bands of Arabs.

They aspired to what they did not attain, deceived

by lies that outdid even Ash'ab in greed.

Your army surrounded them from this side and that,

so they met you only in humiliation and flight.

    فرحتَ والقومُ في ويلٍ وفي حَرَب

    You arrived, and the people were lost in pride and insolence;

then you departed, and the people were in woe and destitution.

When they saw you, with God's steeds drawn close

around you, and victory near, ahead of the steeds,

they beheld a king wrapped in justice—

no, rather an angel with a crown bound about his brow.

So they surrendered and offered themselves for requital,

and those who had not repented before the sword repented.

You returned amid the recitation of the surah of Victory,

while Qilhah's people were in 'Perish Abu Lahab.'

And the treacherous man, on the day of al-Jahili, perished

of hunger, his wife the bearer of firewood.

    والسيف أصدق أنباء من الكتب

    You humbled their insolent one and led their rebel captive;

the sword speaks truer tidings than books.

So today no camel bellows in Qilhah,

and a wolf would not spring even if a ewe butted it.

O third companion to the sun and moon, hear the praises of one

offering your kingship the garden's thanks to the clouds.

He calls to you, O son of Ali, when you hear him:

'O jewel of kingship, this is the jewel of letters.'

You gave him the gold of generosity, and there poured forth

his poems as gold from that gold.

And he has purebred horses from your bounty,

and kindness from you and your noble sons.

    واليومَ قد كثُر الرحمنِ في شعبِ

    I used to be watered by one channel, and that sufficed;

today the Most Merciful has increased the flow through many channels.

A king here, a king there,

another king here—all have stood by me as you have.

I fear no poverty after today with you—rather,

with al-Muzaffar, twin to the crown and swords.

You honored me, first among you; I am the panegyrist of your last,

who has betrayed neither your forebear nor your descendants.

Al-Mutanabbi attained not even part of my standing,

when he was a neighbor of Banu Hamdan in Aleppo.

Nor did Ibn Hani, in al-Rashid's days, have

anything like my bond with your bounty.

What shall I count of the ranks I have attained?

And who can count the drops of a streaming raincloud?

No fortress or town you have taken counts for much,

after the Hijaz and the House with its veils.

Were you to desire the Pleiades from her rising places,

you would pluck her out, mother of the seven blazing stars.
