For what cause do the tears of your eye flow,

And your heart tremble with the sickness of yearning?

And why do I see your limbs as though they

Melt and weaken beneath a languid glance?

May good be yours! What is this infatuation I see,

And what is this affliction you take upon yourself?

Is it because a bevy from Hilal ibn ʿAmir appeared

That you grieved? What good does grieving do you?

Have you no rescuer from the captivity of yearning,

And none to give you redress against your loved ones' injustice?

Spare your soul the love of beautiful women, for it

Is an incurable ill by which bodies waste away and perish.

If loved ones dear to you have departed,

Never lose hope, through all time, that they may turn tenderly toward you.

And among the neighbors leaving at dawn is an oryx calf of the sands,

Whose two anklets are brushed by striped silk.

An innocent: whenever his waist tries to rise

For some purpose, we fear his hips will lag behind.

He implores me to tell of Mufarrih's noble deeds

Whenever I visit him while night is pitch-black and shrouding,

    And urges me to explain my circumstances with him;

How often I extol him in praise and offer fresh tributes!

So I said to him: Have you denied Mufarrih's excellence?

No one is more illustrious or noble than he.

    He is the sword, polished along its sides and keen-edged;

What, then, do you think of a sword when the sword is keen?

His resolves are like battalions with weapons leveled,

And his favors are like rain-clouds pouring down.

His character tells you of the goodness of his stock,

And rain's lightning reveals its downpour.

Lofty: you see the chieftains around his throne

As though they were devotees gathered around the Kaaba.

A brother to fair-faced wise men when life is bleak,

And lord of gleaming platters when the wind is bitterly cold.

The throats of high-humped she-camels stream with blood among his dwellings

When it is said: A night-visitor has arrived seeking hospitality.

Wealth trembles before him whenever a visitor arrives,

Nor can it be blamed, for generosity ravages wealth.

Ah, would that I knew whether there has been another like Mufarrih,

So I might recognize him—or whether none exists, and know that.

My thought is bewildered by the wonders of his excellence,

And who can reckon the raindrops and the sand?

I was foolish to try to describe the pages of his glory,

For Abu al-Dawwar's glory cannot be encompassed in description.

He is al-Jundabi al-Muʿribi, through whom

The rhymes—finely patterned verse—have been ennobled.

A youth for whose sake Qahtan envied ʿAkk,

And Khindif grew jealous of Zayd ibn Thawban.

I say to riders worn thin by the sting of night travel,

As a driver, harried by the cold, urges them on:

Behold, this is the Dhuʾali full moon: recognize

Its radiance; and this is the Dhuʾani sea: draw from it!

And this is he who spreads favors while the rain-clouds withhold,

And this the piercer of champions while the brown spears bleed.

I tell everyone of your bounty from my own experience,

And speak truth to them in what I say, and swear to it.

You bear no shame among them, O Mufarrih,

    Except that some say: You are extravagant with wealth;

And that you are the most faithful of men in pledge and covenant,

When base men make promises and then break them.

May the nights never prevail against you in an assault,

And may their spears never cease to be turned away from you.
