    They said: Sing of Layla in the finest love verse,

    and recall your heartaches in your early days.

    يَهْذي بعزّةَ لم يمللْ ولم يَمِل

    For you have heard Kuthayyir, in his youthful passion,

    raving about ʿAzza, neither wearying nor turning away;

    فدمعه بين مُنهلٍ ومنهملِ

    then Ibn Maʿmar, since his Buthayna departed,

    his tears by turns pouring and streaming;

    and Qays of ʿAmir, whose ʿAmiri beloved vanished

    from him, so he roamed with his reason unbound.

    And you are the subtlest of them in understanding, the most bountiful

    sea, and the swiftest in thought when haste is needed.

    وكان أخطلِهُم يُدعى إلى الخطل

    I replied: If I wished, their Jarir would go unmentioned,

    and their Akhtal would be branded a babbler;

    nor would his words exalt their Mutanabbi:

    “He answered alongside me, though the caller was only a ruined campsite.”

    I swear, the archers of Thuʿal do not inflict,

    O Suʿd, what the arrows of eyes have inflicted on me.

    Nor do I see in the man slain at al-Taff a thirst

    like mine, caused by dusky lips planted in honey.

    والقوم بانوا وهذا الدهر ذودول

    They once were, and so were we; then we left their dwellings;

    and the people departed; this age has its turns of fortune.

    ʿAwaja rejoiced when we departed, and so did its dweller.

    Who can blame a man stricken at heart for moving away?

    ومكةٌ غاب عنها خاتمُ الرّسَل

    Moses, son of ʿImran, left his land and journeyed by night;

    and from Mecca the Seal of the Messengers went away.

    وادي الكرام ووادي الخَيل والخول

    If I have parted from women in howdahs, I have indeed found a spring—

    the valley of the generous, and the valley of horses and retainers;

    the dwellings of the clan of Lam ibn Jaritha,

    dwellings that never lack provisions for guests,

    أرض الجمى ورجال العلم والعمل

    between al-Durayb and the west of Dhu Rimaʿ—

    the land of al-Jama, and of men of learning and deeds;

    each a bright-faced man who does not approach his female neighbor

    with the creeping gait of a desert wolf threading through gaps.

    Much envied for all the blessings they possess,

    clothed in generosity, bare of miserliness.

    For anyone who turns seeking a qibla, a sanctuary,

    his high place is none other than the qibla of qiblas.

    Tell the odes: Do not grieve for anyone

    you have left behind: here are ʿAqil and ʿAli.

    أوزرتِ هذا فكل الناس في رجل

    If you visit that one, all people are in one homeland;

    or visit this one, and all people are in a single man.

    The sky is clear for you—lay eggs and whistle; and here

    are water and pasture: drink and eat of them.
