O my reproacher, do you claim to be rightly guided?

How can a corrupted heart be mended?

No, you have not suffered as I have—[and steadfast: text unclear].

No, you have not felt anything like what I feel.

How can the carefree know of one afflicted?

Or can one awake be equal to one asleep?

How far apart you and I are in love!

My heart blazes, while your heart is cold.

    ما زادني منها البعيرُ الواخد

    Do not think every departing caravan stirs my longing;

the long-striding camel among them adds nothing to my yearning.

It is not the tilted howdah I seek, but rather

the sand dune within it—or rather, the swaying reed.

O resounding thundercloud of summer, tell me:

Have you rained upon al-Liwa's dunes, O thundercloud?

I am jealous over the dust of their land,

lest the generous raincloud kiss it.

And the herald's words about them delight me,

as he says, 'Those are their gazelles, O hunter!'

What has wearied the aged man is his infatuation,

while the maiden with budding breasts shuns his company.

If he says, 'I am enamored of you, filled with longing,'

she tells him, 'Far be it from you! You are a father.'

And she laughs again, while he weeps, lovesick.

Surely gray hair finds no market among the young.

Between [me] and poverty lies a single cry:

O Rashid son of Muzaffar, O Rashid!
