أمَّاas for الهوىlove فَكماso, as عهدتyou knew أكيدُsteadfast
والشوقand longing ياO ذاتwearer of الوشاحthe sash شديدُintense
As for love, it is steadfast, just as you knew it;
and longing, O wearer of the sash, is intense.
فارقتنيyou left me ولكلand for every عضوٍlimb رّنةٌa wail
ولكلّand for every جفنٍeyelid مَنْهَلٌa watering place مورودfrequented
You left me, and every limb has a lament,
and every eyelid a watering place much frequented.
وطَمِعْتُand I hoped بعدَكafter your departure بالسَّلوfor solace فخاننيbut it betrayed me
أنَّthat السلوsolace كماًas علمتَyou knew بعيدfar away
After you left, I hoped for solace, but it failed me;
solace, as you know, is far beyond reach.
كمhow long ذاthis التّعللُself-consolation بالمنىwith wishes وإلىand until متىwhen
بعسىwith 'perhaps' وليتَand 'if only' وليسand not ذاكthat يفيدavails
How long this self-consoling with wishes, and how long
with 'perhaps' and 'if only,' when none of that avails?
لاnot الدربُthe lane بعدَكمafter your departure علىin العهدthe former state الذيwhich
كنتمyou were ولاnor ماءthe water of الحُصيبal-Ḥuṣayb بَرودcool
Since you left, the lane is no longer as it was
when you were here, nor is al-Ḥuṣayb's water cool.
والأثلand the tamarisk غيرnot the same as الأثْلthe tamarisk أيْمنَto the right of رَادعRādiʿ

And the tamarisk is not the same tamarisk to the right of Rādiʿ;
alas, its outspread shade has shrunk.
ياO رائحينtravelers إلىto الحِمىthe protected pasture والمُنحَنىand the bend
باللهby God عُودواreturn مرةًonce وَنَعودُand we shall return
O travelers to the protected pasture and the bend,
for God's sake, return once, and we shall return.
عانقتُI embraced أغصانًthe boughs of اللّوىal-Liwā منfrom بعدكمafter your departure
وَلَهَاin lovesick bewilderment وظنيand my belief أنَهنَّthat they قُدودُslender figures
I embraced the boughs of al-Liwā after you left,
distraught with longing, believing them to be slender figures.
ورشفتand I sipped أزهارَthe blossoms of الأقاحdaisies كأنَّماas though
هيthey والشقيقand the anemones مباسمٌsmiling mouths وخُدودand cheeks
And I sipped the daisy blossoms, as though
they and the anemones were smiling mouths and cheeks.
وإذاand when الظباءُthe gazelles سَنَحْنَthey passed by خلتُI imagined سوالفَاsides of necks
مِنكمof you ولكنْbut مَاnot لهنّthey have عُقّودnecklaces
And when gazelles passed by, I thought their necks
were yours—but they wore no necklaces.
ماليwhat have I to do وتغْريدُwith the cooing of الحَمامِthe doves برادعin Rādiʿ
وَسَقامُand the affliction of جَفنيmy eyelid ذلكthat التغريدُcooing
What have I to do with the doves' cooing in Rādiʿ,
when that cooing is my eyelid's affliction?
وعلامand why أفرحُI rejoice بالمنازلِin the dwellings لاnot أرىI see
فيهنin them أحبابيmy loved ones الذينَwhom أُريدُI desire
And why should I rejoice in the dwellings, when I do not see
within them my loved ones, whom I desire?
ياO رايُحاًtraveler عَدناًAden بحيثُwhere قصورُهاits palaces

O traveler to Aden, where its palaces
stand beneath the stars, and its sea stretches wide,

kiss Ṣārim al-Dīn's fingertips, where
liberality and generosity have their natural home.
