Do you recall the pilgrimage day at Arafat,

and the gathering of those casting stones at the Jamarat?

That flock came into view, with Zaynab among them,

and her age-mates, among bashful women.

you saw a sand dune beneath the breast of a spear.

In her two cheeks I glimpsed my hell and my paradise,

and saw in her my life and my death.

Had I not feared God as she passed,

I would have drowned that House with my tears.

And had I not feared God after her departure,

I would have burned that House with my sighs.

They both say, “You spoiled your pilgrimage when they unsheathed

their blades against you—the eyes of gazelles.”

and Hazwa—may God water you, acacias!

I see you changed from the days when we were neighbors,

and you were my shade in love and my nightly lodging.

If there is neither shade nor fruit in you,

then may God banish you, trees that you are!

so he united them through gentleness after dispersion.

devoted to abundant prayer and giving.

to the loftiest stations and ranks.

That state of his is not mine, nor is the staff

my staff, nor are those qualities my qualities.

How often you have brought relief to one in distress,

and rescued a caller for help after a night attack!

May the eye never lose you, so long as the hills smile

and lovely, pouring clouds bestow life-giving rain.
