Stop at al-Husayb by the traces of old dwellings.

The tale of lingering there is long, and so is mine.

And when you yearn for al-Jarib and Radi‘,

leave longing for Abraq al-Hannan behind.

Lands of delight, whose quarters never cease

to make the stranger forget his native lands.

And haunts I remember, within whose courts

love dwelt and gazelles exchanged fond glances.

Where smiling mouths and cheeks beam

with dazzling white and deep crimson.

Rather, where pomegranate breasts are borne aloft

    by ban-tree figures—what lovely ban-trees!

Supple beauties: when they pass, trailing their wraps,

branches seem to sway before you among sand dunes.

    Do not marvel at their power and my abasement;

had He who enriched them wished, He would have enriched me.

I would ransom it, valley and inhabitants alike.

and its tamarisks, by every dark, low-hanging cloud,

    فهو المعيضُ عن الحيا الهتان

    with bounty like that of Rashid ibn Muzaffar's palm;

for he stands in place of pouring rain.

A giver of thousands, never holding his gifts over others,

even when every miser who vaunts his favors withholds.

And he follows each favor, close upon its heels,

with another favor, and kindness with kindness.

and built what no pair of hands had built.

And in generosity you revived Hatim for Tayy,

and restored Ma‘n to Banu Shayban.

Many a man has said, looking at you discerningly:

“This man is Yemeni, and generosity is Yemeni.”

Poets cannot fashion praises of you like mine,

ever, nor can they compete in my arena.

and the beauty in their accounts came from Hassan.
