How fare the dwellers of al-Aqiq after my departure?

Against my will, I am far from the people of al-Aqiq.

We and they were neighbors, and our curtained tents

were pitched around the solitary dune.

Our company passed its evenings and mornings at ease,

peaceful in the comfort of a life of plenty.

But today we have gone to al-Ghawr, while Najd is their home,

and al-Ghawr is far from the heights of Najd.

Separation's jest and earnest have wasted me away,

and wearied me with its jesting and earnestness.

Who can make their homes draw near to me, with them,

and the old days return as they once were,

and the ruins—the ruins of al-Liwa—flourish again

with Hind's kin and Hind close by?

Why, when the breeze of Alij blows,

from Alij, with its wormwood and laurel,

does it melt my heart and melt my mind,

rouse my longings and lay bare my anguish?

And if a gray dove sings in an arak tree,

mourning a loss, then she bears what I bear.

As for me, I have a heart enamored

of every figure and every rounded breast.

I have not ceased weeping, and my heart's blood melts

at lightning's flash and thunder's plaintive moan.

Fear of my envier is the least of what I suffer,

and tears reveal the guarded secret.

How many lovers there are! Yet I

have been made to bear love's heavy burdens alone.

O you of the pearly mouth, whose saliva

is of wine, ambergris, and honey,

may I have a sip from you, and may I have a kiss

from that mouth and that cheek?

And might the sands of al-Liwa bring us together,

and might we find healing in reunion after rejection?
